Premier Thanom Kittikachorn said Thailand plans to withdraw as many as possible of its 12 000 troops in South Vietnam. He cited growing tension in Thailand and neighboring Laos and Cambodia and said battle tested units would be kept to defend frontiers.
Agnew told Park that once the long range modernization program finishes, US troops in Korea would be unnecessary. Park reportedly accepts this as desirable though Shin clarified it was a general explanation of the Nixon Doctrine. No discussion of full American withdrawal occurred.
U S officials say a joint peacekeeping force of U S and Soviet units could work under a United Nations umbrella observer role in the Middle East. Israel seeks on the ground security assurances, while U N involvement would go beyond Security Council actions. The plan envisions an indefinite on the scene presence, with both powers sharing responsibilities and possible practical duties yet to be decided.
Thirty two Americans were believed dead after a Chinook helicopter was hit by an enemy rocket at Fire Base Judy near Kham Duc. Two bodies were recovered, seven wounded, 30 missing. The disaster followed a record low weekly casualty figure and marked one of the war’s worst helicopter losses.

Buri Electric marks expansion with a new larger building on Highway 11 East at 31st Street in Monroe. Owner Milo Friedrichs hosts an open house on Saturday Aug 29 to showcase a showroom of 250 fixtures and ongoing electrical contracting and service work for local businesses and a growing city.
