Monroe firemen answered a call to the Sam Waelti residence at 1620 23rd Ave. for a house fire at 11 45 this morning. Fire Chief Josef J. Benkert said a fallen tree knocked down power lines and when power returned the wires sparked near the house. Waelti had the blaze extinguished by the time firefighters arrived and the Power and Light Co. assisted in repairing the lines.

Mrs. Carl Marty Sr. of 2290 16th St. Monroe died at 4 55 AM in St. Clare Hospital following a hip fracture and stroke after a fall. The widow of a veteran cheesemaker she led a long life tied to Monroe’s cheese and tourism industries and leaves four daughters two sons and many grandchildren. Her life spanned from 1861 to near 104 with deep ties to local churches and community service. Funeral arrangements are set for Monday with services at St John’s United Church of Christ in Monroe.
