Drama preview builds interest for Wilhelm Tell weekend in New Glarus

Nearly 100 New Glarus residents travel to Madison to stage a festival preview at West Towne Mall from 1 to 4 p.m. They yodel sing dance and blow alphorns in authentic costumes to promote the 34th annual Wilhelm Tell Drama set for Labor Day weekend in a wooded glen east of New Glarus. The play runs in English on Sept 4 and 6 and in German on Sept 5 with the Tell grounds program starting at 1 p.m. Featured acts include the 16 member New Glarus Yodelers Swiss entertainer Robbie Schneider Roger Bright 23 Wilhelm Tell Usherettes in 13th century dress the Little Swiss Miss dancers and Kerwin Steffen at the organ.

Fall Fire School Opens with Two-Hour Classes Program

The 35th annual Fall Fire School of the Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois Firemen's Association begins at Green County Fairgrounds with a six session morning program of two-hour classes on Hose, Ladders, Breathing Apparatus, First Aid, and Emergency Care. Instructors include Gordon Christianson W. J. Eckert M. E. Peterson Dr O C Kreymner and more. Afternoon demonstrations follow at 1 p.m. with Monroe firefighters preparing equipment and Governor attendees welcome.

Wisconsin enrollment falls 3580 from last year

Public and nonpublic schools in Wisconsin are projected to enroll 1,187,000 students this fall, down 3,580 from 12 months ago. Other items note Madison weather at 83 degrees, unemployment claims at 32,770, a highway funding debate over auto license fees, a traffic toll of 672 deaths this year, and Otto Festge named secretary to Rep. Kastenmeier.
