Wreck of Hospital Ship Benevolence Kills Eighteen
A freighter rammed the hospital ship Benevolence in thick fog four miles off the Golden Gate, sinking her in 75 feet of water. Nineteen were confirmed dead with many survivors taken to hospitals. a court of inquiry was ordered to probe the accident.

Beloit born Lt. Robert W. Fisher a World War II veteran was wounded in Korean action on August 11 relatives reported. He is the son of Col. Robert W. Fisher and has a brother Donald living in Middleton. His mother was the late Arlene Fulton daughter of Mrs. Belle Fulton of South Beloit. An uncle is Lyle Fulton of Beloit who has a Sugar River cottage. The family also includes his wife and three children in Madison.

Jerrad Disch aged 12 suffered the loss of the ring finger and injury to the middle finger on his left hand in a haying accident on his uncle Lyndolph Amacher’s farm route 3 yesterday afternoon. He clutched a rope and his hand was caught in a pulley as hay was lifted into a barn by a tractor.

Man Held Here In Auto Thefts
Gunther Martin Storreck of Watertown is jailed in Green County charged with stealing Bartlett Clark Browntown’s automobile. He admits stealing the Clark car and a Madison car found abandoned in Green County yesterday. Sheriff Matt Sollivan said Storreck was turned over by Lafayette officials who had seized the Clark car after a stall. Lafayette recovered the Clark car this morning and Green County police found the Madison car abandoned off county Trunk N north of Brown town. The Clark car was stolen Thursday night and the Madison car Wednesday.
