Three Lives Lost In Area Accidents

Three area residents died in weekend traffic incidents. Larry Zweifel, 17, of Belleville, died after a three car collision on Highway 69. Joe Kjelland, 25, of Footville, and Paul Johnson, 22, rural Janesville, perished when their car left the road near Footville. Kjelland and Johnson were Vietnam veterans and GM employees at Janesville. Funeral services are scheduled for Aug 26 for both men. Zweifel’s funeral is set for Aug 26 in Belleville.

Monroe Hosts Fall Fire School In Monroe This Year

More than 3 000 people attended the afternoon demonstrations at the 33rd Fall Fire School of the Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois Firemen's Association at the Green County Fairgrounds. Monroe volunteers and Chief Joe Benkett were praised for hosting and local preparations.

Nixon delays Vietnam troop decision citing more data

President Nixon postponed any further troop withdrawals from Vietnam at least until early September to allow time for information gathering and assessment of heightened enemy activity noted in mid August. Local fire department honors featured a church steeple flag presentation and demonstrations on foam versus water fire suppression.

Centuries Observed as Freitag Farm Plaques Dedicated

Revered speaker Rev. A R Achtemeier recounts the Freitag family heritage at a Saturday dedication on the century old Freitag farm along Highway 69 between Monticello and New Glarus. Dietrich Freitag bought the land in 1869 and introduced Brown Swiss cattle to Green County.

Child Killed In Accident On Rock County Farm

Two year old Matthew James Marchant son of Emery and Marjorie Marchant died when a tractor wheel ran over him at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Rock County. Coroner ruled accidental death, no inquest. Survived by parents a brother and grandparents. Services set for Aug 26 at Newcomer Funeral Home Brodhead with burial in Union Cemetery Oakley.

Orfordville woman joins Swissair tour to Switzerland

Mrs. Hanna Olmstead of Orfordville is among about 140 travelers joining a New Glarus Yodelers trip to Switzerland. She will stay seven weeks at the Grand Hotel in Interlaken and tour the country while the group sails from Chicago O'Hare aboard a Swissair jetliner.

Appeal Notice Filed in Court For 3 Fathers

William B. Ball and Thomas C. Eckerle filed a notice of appeal in Green County Circuit Court Monroe on behalf of three Amish fathers convicted for failure to enroll children in New Glarus High School. The National Committee for Amish Religious Freedom will raise funds to support the Amish in their religious liberty case.

Albany Police Had Busy Weekend Says Chief Glaser

Albany police logged 15 cases from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon including a lost dog found near Paul Stefanik farm and two outside village accidents. Deputy Sheriff Glaser reported a hit and run in the 100 block of North Water Street and a man charged with no license and alcohol violations.
