Amish Parents Found Guilty Of School Attendance Violation

Judge Roger L. Elmer in Green County Court rules Jonas Yoder Adin Yutzky and Wallace Miller from New Glarus are guilty of violating Wisconsin compulsory education laws by failing to keep children in school beyond the eighth grade. The 22 page opinion says the law is proper despite religious conflicts and stresses balancing parental religious rights with Amish youth education.

Franklin School Sale Planned by Green County Society

Directors of the Green County Historical Society met at the Universalist Church Museum to plan advertising for bids to sell the Franklin School west of the city. They also approved an antique consignment sale at the museum this fall with Jack Kundert and Robert Bussen as chairmen. The group will host the South Central Regional meeting of the Wisconsin Council for Local History in Monroe on Sept 6, with tours open from 10 30 to noon and a luncheon at Idle Hour Mansion. A first floor exhibit prep and heritage displays are planned along with a special display for Heritage Sunday Sept 21 within Wonderful Wisconsin Week Sept 21 27. The Universalist Church Museum opens Sundays 2 5 p.m. Joseph Urban is president, with Bussen as vice president and Mrs. Orville Evans secretary and Mrs. John Irvin treasurer. Directors include Harold Snively Jack Kundert and Mrs. William Wartienweiler.

Trip To Homeland Dr Santiago Returns From Philippines

Dr. F S Santiago obstetrician gynecologist at Monroe Medical Center returns from a 3 1/2 week trip to the Philippines. He attended the Philippine American Medical Association meeting in Manila July 16 to Aug 4 and met with family. He saw President Nixon and Miss Universe Celia Diaz, noted Manila population growth, and described medical convention themes and foundation aid for rural areas. He stopped in Hong Kong en route home.

Spring Square Gets New Face From City Workmen

In Monroe the Spring Square area gains a fresh look as a city crew seals the nearby parking lot with blacktop and repaints stalls to wider widths. Nathan Klassy, street superintendent, notes an experimental slurry seal will also be used on 16th and 17th Avenues near the high school, with hot mix paving arriving around Sept. 1 for new city streets.

Father Kalscheuer to Be Transferred From St Victor's

Announcement confirms Father Henry Kalscheuer will soon leave St Victor's Catholic Church after serving since 1967. A family picnic in his honor is set for 6 30 Monday August 18 open to all, with guests asked to bring a dish to pass. He departs on a three week Europe tour August 21 with his father.

1970 Green County Fair Dates Set

The 116th Green County Fair will run July 29 to August 2 with events planned over four days. Directors hope the early schedule prevents conflict with other events like the Rock County Junior Fair. A full 1969 fair audit on receipts disbursements and attendance is underway and due next week.

Monroe High Band Demonstration Unit at UW Marching Clinic

The Monroe High School Band will act as demonstration unit for the 1969 Marching Band Clinic hosted by University of Wisconsin Extension Music Department and the Department of Bands on Aug 18–19 on the Wisconsin campus. Clinicians Jerry Bilik and George Cavender will cover instrument placement rehearsal warm ups audience response and other topics. Deb Schilt directs the Concert Band and Joseph Kieraldo leads the Monroe program.

Belmont siblings lead Lafayette dairy judging team to state win

Josetta and John Eustice from Belmont earned second and fifth in the Wisconsin State 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging meet as Lafayette County won team honors and earned a berth to nationals in Columbus Ohio. Teammates were Dennis Popp and Dean Booth with coach David Running. Second place went to Kewaunee County led by Ron Paider Ruth Selner and Dave Selner.

Memphis couple found murdered in fashionable apartment

Roy Kenneth Dumas and Vernalyn Kelly Dumas were discovered dead at their Memphis residence. Police say Vernalyn may have been raped. investigators compare the killings to the Sharon Tate case but with no link confirmed.
