In Green County Jessie M. Holcomb defeats Wilbur E. Deininger for clerk of circuit court. Governor Goodland wins renomination after close GOP balloting with strong support in Dane and Milwauke e counties. McCarthy defeats La Follette in a dramatic Senate race ending the La Follette dynasty.
The Associated Press reports President Truman marks one year since Japan's surrender with a call for prayer and steadfast resolve. John R. Steelman recalls four postwar goals including full employment, rising living standards, economic stabilization, and expanded opportunities for farmers and business. Forrestal, Patterson, and Eisenhower send greetings. Japan's people in Tokyo share cautious optimism.
Complete tabulation shows 12 of 27 precincts reporting with a final margin of 68 votes defeating Keegan 1929 to 1861. Schoonover led Albany village Brodhead New Glarus areas with a 115 vote plurality. Holcomb won clerk of circuit court nomination 1897 to 1810, with majorities in Albany Brodhead Cadiz Clarno Mt Pleasant New Glarus areas. Sheriff Evan Chambers top Republican vote getter with 3256. Coroner Stuessy led Democrats in Albany Brodhead New Glarus villages.
The American Communication Association and Press Wireless Inc faced off over information flow as press associations and newspapers relied on foreign bureaus and auxiliary channels to deliver news, with partial success in extending coverage and access.
Green County voters packed the polls in a heavy primary season with high interest in governor, US senator, state senate, assembly, and clerk of circuit court contests. Schoonover edged Keegan for assembly by 68 votes. Holcomb led Deininger for circuit court clerk by 87 votes as canvassing begins.
Olson won the Republican renomination for a 4 year state senate term in the 17th district by a large vote lead over Morgan and Robinson. Incumbents McNeight and Freehoff trailed challengers in their districts, while other incumbents held narrow or clear leads in various districts in the primary returns.
Wisconsin Senator Robert M. LaFollette Jr concedes the Republican senatorial nomination to Circuit Judge Joseph R. McCarthy of Appleton after late returns. He sends a telegram of congratulations and praises Wisconsin voters for 21 years of service in public office. McCarthy says the campaign centered on issues and government theories and thanks supporters.
In Wisconsin Governor Walter S. Goodland won renomination while Vermont and South Carolina governors failed to advance. Mortimer R. Proctor lost to Ernest Gibson in Vermont by about 8,000 votes, the first Vermont governor denied a second term in modern times. In South Carolina, Ransome J. Williams led but fell to a runoff plan with Thurmond and McLeod.
Henry Youngblood a Lafayette county assemblyman serving his fourth term was defeated by Martin Munson of Wiota township by 500 votes on the Republican ticket. Youngblood disputed Harry Keegan’s claim that he drafted and introduced the 1939 Swiss cheese grading bill.
Washington OPA authorized immediate retail price increases on coffee ranging from 10 to 13 cents a pound. The rise stems from cancellation of a 3 cent subsidy and added import ceilings to encourage more coffee importation. Retailers may apply standard markups, and processors face a 10 cent rise for roasted coffee products.
Green county delivered sweeping support in the year’s primaries, backing Gov. Walter S. Goodland with 2,694 votes to Ralph Immell’s 811 and others. Voters also favored U S Sen. Robert M. La Follette Jr. over Joseph McCarthy 2,201 to 1,186, while signaling anti Young Bob sentiment.
Capt. Walter Schindler and his bride, arriving to visit his brother Dr. John A. Schindler, attend New Glarus centennial events, and honeymoon across the country. The former New Glarus resident commanded the USS Topeka, earned the Navy Cross at Coral Sea, received the Order of the British Empire, and served 29 years in the Navy. He will soon report to the Navy Department in Washington.
Kenosha County's poliomyelitis total rose to 37 yesterday with one new case reported to health authorities, as officials confirmed the latest patient and urged continued caution.
The Frankfurt provost marshal stated Pvt. Richard C. Hanold of Belleville Wisconsin was killed Aug. 11 after being struck by a street car near Frankfurt. He served with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
City officials order Buchner park swimming pool closed next Thursday to prevent spread of polio myelitis. The pool had been set to close on Labor Day and now timing shifts to curb health risk.
