A fire at the Lyle Condon farm near Brodhead destroyed a barn holding about 4,000 hay bales. Discovered at 1:45 p.m. the blaze burned until midnight with no insurance reported, fire chief said.

Monroe Clinic top floor addition nears completion
The Monroe Clinic’s $2 million three story addition nears completion with the top floor in use by the surgical and X ray departments. A new radiology suite supports deep therapy X ray therapy and isotopes while room for scanners may come later. A radiologist will join next year under Dr. Robert G. Zach and Dr. Arthur Chandler. The third floor houses orthopedic surgeon Dr. Henry Najat and urology staff in a new cystoscopic room. The building features carpeted offices and waiting areas, a new lab, an automatic switchboard, intercom and central dictation, and an elevator with side doors. The administration move to the first floor is planned for September end with a new record room in the basement.

Miss Connie Lee Platts 20 of Eau Claire State University and daughter of the Eau Claire mayor was crowned Fairest of the Fair as the 117th Wisconsin State Fair opened. She wins a $1000 scholarship and hosts duties, joined by runners up Miss Sandra Andresen and Miss Barbara Prideaux. About 3,000 attended the pageant and officials counted 9,717 paid admissions on preview night as judging began in junior Holsteins swine steer and sheep with more than $30,000 in junior premium awards awaiting competition. The fair expects about a million visitors by Aug. 19 and officials scheduled press day for media coverage.

Browntown Sets Hearings on Zoning and Building Code
The Village Board approved public hearings on a proposed zoning ordinance, building code, and an ordinance to establish a building inspector office. Hearings are set for Monday September 11. Area Man Injured In Traffic Mishap Near Calamine
Maynard Bloom, 40, of Cala mine, a driver for Leo Willi cheesemaker at Cala mine factory, was injured Wednesday when he lost control of a milk truck on Highway 6 five miles north of Calamine. The truck rolled over in a field and Bloom was thrown from the cab. he was taken to Darlington hospital for observation and treatment.

Gratiot South Wayne District Debuts As Black Hawk Schools
The newly consolidated district will start its first year with 51 teachers and about 950 students. Black Hawk Senior High in South Wayne and Black Hawk Junior High in Gratiot will serve as main secondary schools, with two elementary sites and several rural schools. First day Aug 30 includes kindergarten in place and hot lunch.
