House Defeats Mandatory Rule On Price Control

Washington reports the House defeated an amendment to require the president to impose wage and price controls if living costs rose 5 percent above June 15 levels. The companion banking committee bill would grant broad powers to control wages and prices, ration materials, curb credit, and speed defense production, with a limited sunset to mid 1952.

Killer of Three Slain by Officers

William Harris Ozarks gunman sought in the Eminence killings was shot to death by officers in Ripley county. He allegedly killed his daughter Barbara Harris and Richard Fansler and his son Homer Fansler. Rosa Fansler and Elmer Nichols were wounded. Harris fled to the Ozarks after the triple. The motive is unknown.

Polio Victim Dies: Waterford Boy Ronald Beck

Ronald Charles Beck, 12, a Waterford youth stricken with polio June 26, died last night at St. Luke's hospital. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beck of Racine.

Brookfield Zoo reports the death of its only gorilla baby amid a weeklong battle with dysentery. The 13 month old animal had shown signs of illness before passing away.

School board approves repairs and overflow parking plan

The board advanced school room additions and building repairs while granting use of Central and East school lots for Cheese day overflow parking requested by Wesley L Dodge. Argyle Woman 75 Dies At Home After Long Life

Mrs Theodore Thurston 75 a Kansas native who moved to Argyle at age 22 died at 1115 p m yesterday at her Argyle residence. Born July 21 1875 in Cherokee county Kansas she later moved to Monroe and married Theodore Thurston April 9 1899. Survived by husband a Chicago daughter and son eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services 2 pm Saturday Erickson funeral home with Rev George Crow officiating. Ironwood Manager Resigns in City Squabble

Ironwood Michigan city manager Henry Stevens resigned after a special meeting of the city commission. Commissioner Russel Lumaka cited management problems and a promised report from Stevens. Stevens took a 10 day vacation. Leo Arducant was named acting manager with Callaghan and the street department foremen to handle city work.

U N Council Fails To Break Malik Bloc In Korea Fight

In New York the U N Security Council recessed after a bitter session over Malik tactics. The United States and allies planned informal talks excluding the Soviet delegation to decide how to handle Malik. An proposed July 31 resolution denouncing North Korea was blocked.

129th Infantry Units Halt Here for Fueling

Twenty eight vehicles of the 129th infantry regiment, 44th division of Illinois, paused here for refueling en route to Sparta for summer training maneuvers. They arrived at 5 45 a m and were serviced in about 45 minutes at the Crandall oil plant. An additional 153 division units will pass Saturday morning and halt for breakfast while fueling by tanker trucks on the old Argyle road north of the city.
