Frank J. Ebneter, 41, Monroe, was listed in satisfactory condition at St. Clare hospital after a one car crash on Highway 69 north of Monticello at 6 03 p m yesterday. He suffered fractured ribs a concussion and facial lacerations and will be hospitalized at least a week. Sheriff deputies said he lost control while being pursued by New Glarus Police Chief Calvin Wickline. The crash occurred at the Conrad Stauffer curve as Ebneter allegedly ran a stop sign and refused to pull over. He was taken to hospital by ambulance. Sparks flew from a utility pole after the car struck it. the vehicle was a total loss.
William D. Knight of Rockford, 72, former Winnebago County state’s attorney and retired Big Ten football official, died today after hospitalization since a heart attack Wednesday. Knight, a Republican, served as state’s attorney for two terms beginning in 1924 and began officiating college football in 1911 before moving to Big Ten games in the 1920s.
Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson told the U S Chamber of Commerce that Congress will appropriate less than the 77 billion dollars budgeted by President Eisenhower. He praised a balanced budget while noting the possibility of not meeting the president’s full request for fiscal 1960 starting July 1.
Gov. Gaylord Nelson resubmitted his nomination of Milwaukee Alderman Matt Schimenz as Public Service Commission chairman. The move caused a Senate recess for caucus after an earlier 18 14 rejection. Sen. Allan Busby objected and cited a rule barring action on a previously rejected appointment.
Joseph B. Huber of Jos. Huber Brewing Co. was reported in satisfactory condition at St. Clare hospital after falling about nine feet from a ladder in the new bottling building. He struck his hip on steel strips on a conveyor track and suffered bruises. X rays were taken to check for broken bones. The accident occurred around 10 a.m. today.
The Monroe Eagles Auxiliary marks its second anniversary for a countywide cancer aid program. Since April 23, 1957, members have produced 20 340 dressings for patients at homes hospitals and nursing homes. They deliver dressings free of charge and have 5 000 on hand for emergencies. The unit also maintains a wheelchair loan and has received recognition from patients and the American Cancer Society. The 1959 Cancer Crusade runs during the anniversary period with a state goal of 470 000.
Geneva reports indicate the Soviet Union endorsed a British suggestion to end the nuclear test deadlock with limited inspections. The move aimed at splitting the Western alliance seemed not to succeed as British and U.S. delegations signaled openness to the idea while demanding staged suspension of tests be seriously considered.
