Meeting to aid tornado victims planned in Green County
An emergency planning meeting for tornado victims will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Green County Agricultural Building. Local residents rural and city will be invited. Attendees include businessmen finance experts and building planners to discuss aid sources in building plans and long term rebuilding factors. The Monroe Chamber of Commerce coordinated disaster fund collection and allocation with press and radio and will hold a follow up meeting with Legion VFW and Eagles to determine fund use and a possible central clearing house. The Red Cross has closed aid applications as of yesterday.

Harold Snively, Monroe First Ward alderman, was named head of the Board of Public Works succeeding 9. N. Johnson who did not run in April’s election. John Steinmann, Monticello architect, expected to present sketches for the city garage this week as reconstriction aims to start within two weeks. The board will seek quotations but no bids due to the city’s emergency after the April 11 tornado. Street Superintendent Jack Erb noted three city vehicles repaired at Metal Specialties in Freeport.

Moritz plays Fantasie in E Flat on cornet while Nancy Hughes sings two Swiss Folk Song Suite portions arranged for americ an symphonic band by Allan F Barnard. The 75 minute program features the Junior High Cadet Band High School Orchestra and High School Band directed by Barnard with research support from Prof Raymond Dvorak.

Fred D. Kubly plans to buy the Swiss Wheel restaurant from Alden Hawthorne. No possession date is set. Kubly, a Monroe Post Office distribution clerk, served 9% years in postal work and earlier with the Milwaukee Railroad and Express Company. He was born in Monroe, spent 10 years in Milwaukee, and returned in 1930. He is a World War II veteran.

Ed Murrow Dies At 57 In New York From Lung Cancer
Ed Ward Murrow internationally known radio and television newscaster died at his home in Pawling New York at age 57 after a battle with cancer. Born Egbert Roscoe Murrow on April 25 1908 he rose to fame with WWII broadcasts from London and later led CBS European operations. His career included head of the U S Information Service and iconic wartime journalism that Churchill praised as their finest hour.
