Two high school youths died in a early morning crash near West Bend after attending the junior prom. Frederick Schmidt and Judy Wessell were killed when their car struck a tree on Highway 143 about four miles southeast of West Bend. A third passenger, Freen Wehlwend, was hospitalized in critical condition. All were about 17 years old.
At the United Nations the Security Council considered Egypts plan to run the Suez Canal. Members split on acceptance with Iraq and the Soviet Union favorable to the proposal while others prefer an international agreement. Egypt pledges to follow the 1888 convention, operate the canal, collect tolls, reserve royalties, and seek arbitration and World Court disputes.

Flames destroyed Savanna high school in NL injuring two firefighters, with about 100 students fleeing. The blaze, started by faulty wiring in a closet, caused an estimated 300000 to 500000 dollars in damage to the two‑section building built in 1992 and 1922, amid a Spring Swing dance in the basement gym.
MADISON The Board of State College Regents announced it would hold a hearing here May 1 at the request of Dr. George Ball recently dismissed from Superior State College. The board voted to begin an investigation of the school. Ball, a seven year faculty member, contends charges are indefinable. An April 1 letter said he would not be rehired for another term due to inefficiency and conduct unbecoming a teacher. The investigation heads by Jim Dan Hill, former Wisconsin guard commander, followed petitions from Superior legislators and local citizens for action amid enrollment concerns and discord rumors. Hill dismissed such claims as absurd, noting no student or faculty demonstrations occurred.
Madison police and the district attorney questioned two men in connection with the fatal shooting of Joseph Knock 57 a pinsetter who lived in the bowling alley building. Detectives held the pair on burglary suspicion while a third man was sought.
St. Clare hospital will prohibit evening visits to the pediatrics division effective May 1. Regular visiting hours remain 2 to 4 p.m. daily with up to two visitors per patient. Maternity visits are restricted to husband and grandparents. Visitors are urged to be quiet and considerate.
