At 1 a.m. tomorrow clocks shift ahead to 2 a.m. as daylight saving time begins nationwide. The change, urged by Benjamin Franklin long ago, aims to extend evening sunlight with adoption varying by state and region across the Northeast and other areas.
ERIE Pa Five young children perished in a late night fire that swept a crowded two story frame house in Eries east end. Two other youngsters were burned one critically. Fourteen children under 15 from four Negro families were asleep when the blaze broke out shortly before midnight. Neighbors formed a human chain to drag survivors from the inferno and help the children to safety.

In Greenwood Village near Denver a 28 year old man David F Early killed Merrill A Knight 45 his wife Regina 43 and daughter Karen 15 after being released from Leavenworth. Knight’s son Kenneth 18 escaped. Early confessed and was jailed for murder as authorities plan charges next week. Neighbors stopped his escape after he fled in a car following a four hour terror spree.
Commander Francis Easter of Cecil Jones VFW Post No 2312 announces Louis Oostdik as Loyalty Day chairman for Thursday observance. The VFW color guard will raise the flag at the courthouse at 8 a.m. and lower it at 5 p.m. Citizens are urged to demonstrate loyalty to the American way of life and democratic government.
