In Boston, a blast at the Suffolk County Courthouse injures 22, including a man who lost his leg. Gov Dukakis says violence and a climate of hatred may have helped create the conditions, while a new police unit is formed to tackle violent crime.
First Lady Betty Ford talks on a Citizens Band radio in a San Antonio motorcade en route from a reception to the airport. She uses the handle First Mama and remarks that there are many smokies at her front door, a CB term for police.
A Waupaca County accident left one dead on Thursday, lifting Wisconsin 1976 traffic fatalities to 202 today, compared with 206 on the year-ago date. The report also notes treaty rights case at Lac Courte Oreilles, weather outlook, and other state incidents.
Wisconsin legislators held an unannounced meeting with Atty. Gen. Bronson La Follette to discuss a bill to strengthen the open meetings law. He said the session did not violate the statute and noted the doors were never closed.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger departed for a two week Africa tour with a stated attitude of goodwill and concrete objectives. He will visit seven countries after a London stopover to discuss Lebanon with U.S. envoy L. Dean Brown and British officials before reaching Kenya.
The Spring Fine Arts Festival at Monroe High School opens with a Festival of Films on May 6 and 7. Highlights include Laurel and Hardy in The Music Box shown thrice on May 6, The Phantom of the Opera on May 7, and Bless the Beasts and Children screening on May 6. Admission is free with tickets.
Green County Coroner Richard Wagner said he awaits State Crime Laboratory findings to determine the causes of death for Glen R. Sterkowicz aged 26 of Brodhead and Kathleen A. Hickcox aged 22 of Freeport. DA James Beer said the lab was contacted and a report may be ready by early May. Funeral services were held separately yesterday with Sterkowicz cremated in Rockford and Hickcox buried.

Monroe Sun Prairie Monona Grove and Middleton junior high schools join the Badger Conference project to raise 250 dollars each for a Guatemalan school. Work days run April 24 May 1 and May 8 with 20 pairs of students. Half day 6 full day 12 dollars per pair.
Daylight Saving Time starts this Sunday at 2 a.m. and runs six months to Oct. 31, giving Americans an extra hour of evening light. Congress debates extending DST. Senate approved seven months this year and next, but House inaction stalls change for now. Arizona Hawaii and parts of Indiana remain exempt.
