President Nixon advocates major changes to the tax code including repeal of the 7 percent investment tax credit and halving the 10 percent income surtax. He seeks no tax on poverty families and ensures taxes on the very rich. He cautions taxation will never be popular but should be fair.
At a special Albany Lodge meeting N Roy Bowman 93 was honored for 70 years of Masonic membership making him among the state’s oldest Masons. Deputy Grand Master Donald Krueger presented the 70 year certificate as about 45 members from area lodges attended.
Attorney Carroll Metzner defeated incumbent Ted Chase 225-179 to lead the 2nd Congressional District Republicans. The meeting, held in Madison, also ousted the district vice chair, with delegates aiming to bolster efforts against Rep. Robert W. Kastenmeier amid debates over Knowles administration policies and reapportionment ahead of the 1970 census. Governor Knowles hinted his term might end after the 1969 session.

Albany resident Mrs Robert Bean newly elected LWV treasurer moderates a panel on inter racial marriage. Spring Grove reports purple martins arrival with early nesting at local farms and birds seen in April.
The Old Stone House Ceramics Studio in Albany announces a new ceramic class by Mrs. Elmer Ross. The historic stone house on the Ross farm features a kiln room, greenware area, and a spacious upstairs studio. Classes start Monday, April 28, 1 to 4 pm and 7 to 10 pm, at Russells Corners near County Trunks C and E.
Junior Unit of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary decides to launch the H.O.P.E. program and collect five pound care packages for Vietnam servicemen via USO Clubs. Maureen Wedig joins as new member and Mary Gable promotes donations at the VFW Club.
A total of 215 kindergarten pupils were registered for the 1969 70 school year at orientation sessions held last week in Monroe schools. Enrollment by school: East 41 Lincoln 46 North Side 103 South 25. A special registration session will be held at the Central Office in the Junior High Building at 7 p.m. Thursday April 24 for parents unable to attend.
Mrs. Bernice Kingdon, director of Badger Camp for the mentally retarded, calls on area groups to send representatives to a Thursday 7 30 pm meeting at Monroe High School Lecture Hall. Discussion will cover a permanent camp, a 7236 acre site for a campsite, and extending the current two week Wyalusing State Park session with community involvement urged. Wayne Stroessner chairs the Jaycee project with support from Jacycees and Jaycettes.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Siegenthaler Route 1 Monticello welcomed twin sons at St Clare Hospital on Sunday April 20 The first at 1 55 pm Carl Ray weighed five pounds four ounces The second at 2 05 pm Kirk Edward weighed six pounds one ounce The mother is Nancy Beyer Grandparents and great grandparents are named from Albany Monticello Brodhead and Monroe, with full family details.
Gilmen Anderson, a rural Albany farmer now in Orchardville, underwent emergency heart surgery April 18 after a Thursday night attack. Doctors in Brooklyn report he is “very optimistic” as a pacemaker was installed and the pump removed. Priscilla Bump, his stepdaughter, was summoned to Brooklyn as her relatives wait for the next 48 hours.
Green County Democrats will meet on Thursday May 1 at 8 p.m. in the Commercial and Savings Bank Directors Room to elect delegates and alternates to the state convention. Resolutions to be changed should be discussed for District Cau cus presentation and must be sent to State oo Fred Risser before May th. SENATE ADJOURNS MADISON AP The State Senate met briefly today and adjourned in honor of Sen Norman Sussman D Milwaukee who died Sunday.
Ray Beckman, president of the Green County Conservation League, said this morning there are only a few of the 170,000 league trees and shrubs left at his Monroe garage. About 225 people have claimed plants. He reminded those with trees in bundles to water daily until the planter arrives.
Wisconsin cooperatives show reluctance to join the proposed interstate dairy co op American Milk Producers Inc. Ten local groups held a meeting but took no action with observers present. Officials warn the plan could capture up to 10 percent of national dairy output and affect Chicago price security and independence.
The 1965 Green County UW Alumni scholarship recipients Russell Keen Judo Elizabeth Metz Monticello Wayne Houldberg Albany and David Lysser Monroe will attend the Founder's Day Dinner at the Casino Monticello. Dr. Glenn Pound dean of CALS will speak at 7 30 p m with hospitality at 6 30 p.m. Reservations are managed by William Gyure. All UW alumni are invited.
Bicycle owners must remove current plates ahead of a special registration on Saturday in the municipal building parking lot. Officers warn removal time will slow the process. The VFW Post and Auxiliary cooperate. registration begins at 8 am. All bicycles must be registered by May 1 to ride city streets or sidewalks. The license is 50 cents with required safety gear including brakes and a headlight for dark hours.
