Five Test Areas Set Up on Farms in Green County

Five agricultural demonstration plots have been established in Green County under farm and home development agent Roman Borkovec. Plots at Nathan Grenzow and Ralph Bohren farms test alfalfa top dressing with 500 pounds of 0-10-30B fertilizer. A third plot on Loren Bagley’s land uses 560 pounds of 16-8-8 on pasture. Additional plots include Earl Feldt’s grain demonstration near Monticello and a boron-deficiency alfalfa study on Gilbert Dettwiler’s farm.

More Rain Needed but Fair Pleasant Weekend Forecast

The Monroe area had its first precipitation in two weeks this morning and more rain was possible this afternoon before clear skies bring a pleasant weekend. Rain totals were light, and cropland and fire hazard relief are cited as reasons for renewed rain.

Orfordville Tricycle Death Shocks Family

John Harvey Knudson age 2 died after riding a tricycle off a 20 inch curb and hitting the pavement. His mother watched from a barbershop window as the child died of a broken neck and possible skull fracture. Surviving relatives include Glen and Marjorie Knudson, sisters Kathryn and Karen, brother Gregg, and grandparents from Orfordville and Madison. Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Silverthorn Newcomer funeral home with callers invited Sunday evening.

Airman Dies in Dodgeville Area Highway Crash

An airman named Richard Sullivan aged 20 from Dubuque died when his car left Highway 151 four miles south of Dodgeville and overturned in a farm field. The Wisconsin 1958 highway toll rose to 183 with the fatality.

St Victor plan outlines parochial school features

A new St Victor s parochial grade school at 20th avenue and 15th street highlights a 590 seat parish hall usable as gym and auditorium, with 415 banquet capacity and 450 for events. Architect John W Steinmann notes eight classrooms sized 360 pupil capacity, terrazzo floors, tile washrooms, acoustical ceilings, and modern fluorescent lighting.

26 CARS DERAILED IN MILWAUKEE ROAD TRAIN ACCIDENT

Twenty six cars of an eastbound Milwaukee Road freight train derailed in Elm Grove blocking the main line and a busy thoroughfare and destroying three small buildings. No injuries were reported.

Byrd Predicts Eight Billion Dollar Federal Deficit

Senator Byrd says the government is headed for an eight billion dollar deficit next year even without a tax cut. He cites lower revenues and higher spending as factors and notes resistance to tax reductions may grow in Congress. The Labor Department reports 3.314 million insured unemployment, with a later week showing a 40,000 drop in initial claims.

Miss Babler Honored At Wisconsin Freshman Luncheon

Miss Janis Babler, daughter of Mrs Verla Babler and the late Adrian Babler, was among 268 University of Wisconsin freshmen honored at the annual women s freshman scholarship luncheon in Tripp Commons Memorial Union. The event honors first semester scholars with a B average or better. Babler received the Dr Will B and Neva Gnagi Foundation four year scholarship to the University of Wisconsin.

Hoover undergoes gall bladder removal at Columbia-Presbyterian

Former President Herbert Hoover, age 83, underwent gall bladder removal at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. The operation started at 8 a.m. and finished by 9:15 a.m. Hoover’s condition was reported satisfactory, with his sons Herbert Hoover Jr. and Allan Hoover present. The hospital could not say how long he would stay.

Eisenhower Golf trip halts Camp David construction

President Eisenhower drove from Camp David to Gettysburg Country Club for a round of golf. About 150 workers were temporarily laid off at Camp David to quiet the mountain retreat, as a construction project there was halted. work likely resumes Monday and pay is not docked. Eisenhower was not informed of the layoffs.

Lawrence College senior John H. Cidmore 22 of Janesville died Friday from a skull fracture after a fall on campus outside Main Hall. Authorities said he stumbled while talking with another student and fell down a flight of steps.

Lombardi Fined and Jailed in Waukesha County Probe

Former Waukesha County Sheriff Mike Lombardi was fined 1600 dollars and sentenced to 60 days in Milwaukee County Jail for permitting Club 166 to operate in violation of state law. He also faces concurrent 30 day terms on eight counts related to improprieties and prosecutorial denials.

Carlson Killers Get Added Penalties in 1947 Murder Case

In Madison court Friday maximum penalties of 1 to 30 years were added to life sentences for Robert Winslow and Buford Sennett, convicted of killing Carl Carlson of Superior in 1947. Both men, aged 34 and 32, pleaded guilty to assaulting Carlson’s companion and faced additional sentences to run after the life terms.
