Patty Homb, a 17 year old from Brodhead, is credited with saving Ray Hawkins, 80, whose clothing caught fire while burning grass at his home. She used her coat to extinguish the flames while an on site worker and Mrs. Homb summoned help. Hawkins received treatment at St. Clare Hospital and was later moved to the Milwaukee Burn Center.

The Brodhead fire department responded to smoke pouring from the Ray Bellows home on 12th Street. An hour after arrival, crews had not yet gained control, with a possible lightning strike noted earlier. Bellows works for the city.
