Mennonite Disaster Service Aids Monroe After Palm Sunday Tornado

About two score Mennonite volunteers from Parnell Ka lona Wellman and Sterling Illinois assist Monroe clearing debris after the Palm Sunday tornado. They coordinate with Red Cross and state groups and only respond to invited requests using a ready bus chain saw and boat.

Nine area girls enter Alice-In-Dairyland contest

Entry deadline passed as nine candidates from the area were listed for the Alice-In-Dairyland pageant. New entrant is Van Matre of Monroe, a 1962 Darlington graduate and Stout State University junior majoring in Home Economics. Finalists hail from Darlington, Brodhead, Mt. Horeb, Monroe, and Belmond. Finals set for Sun Prairie on June 24-26.

Monroe Mayor Thanks Helpers After Tornado Cleanup

The Mayor and City Council of Monroe thank organizations and individuals for aid during cleanup after the tornado. Much work remains and residents not needed in the disaster area are urged to stay away to ease traffic and permit repairs. Police and Civil Defense Auxiliaries request cooperation during the Easter weekend traffic surge.

Red Cross mobilizes aid as tornado relief centers open

Red Cross disaster centers in Madison Watertown Monroe and Crystal Lake begin registering families for long term aid after a tornado. By week’s end about 30 families had registered with emergency food and supplies planned for a three day civil defense cleanup. Rickey says Monroe will be the largest operation while surveys continue and aid focuses on restoration even as some families begin self help.

Huston Family Led Disaster Aid In Monroe Tornado

On Sunday afternoon a tornado ripped through Monroe and Green County. Eddie Huston, head of a tree-trimmer crew for United Telephone Co., and his wife Gerrie organized the Red Cross First Aid Station and Canteen. Eddie arrived within ten minutes of impact and helped set up at the old Dairy Queen spot, remaining on scene through Sunday and beyond.

Firemen Answer Two More Calls

Monroe firemen answered two calls yesterday afternoon. A rubbish fire at Chesebro's Trailer Court threatened fuel tanks and a trailer house. Later at Wisconsin Power and Light Co pole yard debris was burning as winds rose near the 7th Ave and 19th St area.
