Wisconsin Gov. Patrick J. Lucey said his decision to call a legislative special session hinges on whether he signs or vetoes the unemployment compensation bill. He also noted Humphrey’s presidential chances remain strong among Carter Udall and Jackson.
A recount of the Green County Board of Supervisors race between Edward J. Kaderly and writes in candidate Larry Kloepping kept the result unchanged. Kaderly won District 31 by two votes 98 to 96. Three other write-in votes were cast. The recount followed a request by Kloepping urged by supporters. The primary canvass occurred the day before.
Two Monroe women suffered minor back injuries in a 9:30 a.m. traffic mishap on Wisconsin 11, east of Wisconsin 23, when a Kenworth semi driven by Thomas H. Fick of Grafton struck the rear of Kathleen M. Sullivan’s car. Passenger Mildred Bonjour also complained of back pain as Lafayette county officers investigated.
The United States and the Soviet Union reached a preliminary accord on implementing on-site inspections for peaceful nuclear explosions. Negotiations began in 1974, with Ambassador Walter Stoessel and Igor Morokhov leading delegations amid detailed provisions and expected government review before final signing and ratification.
The American Legion Zilmer-Riley Post 84 announces an essay contest to honor the Monroe Town Meeting 76 ideas. Entries across Junior High Senior High and adults must be under 500 words and due by April 30 1976 with prizes of 50 25 and 10 dollars and publication rights.
Three scholarships of 300 dollars each are offered by the Green County Mental Health Association. Edward Staskal, Monroe, chair of the scholarship committee, says one award targets education professionals returning to study for special education work. The other two support careers in mental health for graduating seniors or undergraduates. Applications are available at Green County high schools and must be sent to Edward Staskal, Monroe High School, 1600 26th St., Monroe, with a May 4 deadline.
A Thursday evening blaze gut the Dallman residence in Washington Township near Monticello destroying the south side and most of the roof. Firefighters from Monticello aided by Monroe County tanker crews fought the fire for hours and returned at midnight and 5:30 am to douse embers. The couple and their small daughter were home at the time and evacuated with insurance on the home.
The Monroe Fire Department responded to a grease fire in a self cleaning stove at 1721 15th St. owned by Kent Baumgartner and later to a grass fire on the Fred Ingold property southeast of WEKZ. Firefighters contained the stove fire though walls near the appliance were scorched. Firemen removed the stove and cleared smoke with exhaust fans.
The annual Monroe High School fine arts fair becomes a Spring Fine Arts Festival from May 6 to 9 featuring student art, vocal and instrumental music, Orchesis, drama, a film festival, workshops, guest artists, poets, and faculty shows. Activities include a May 6 film fest and drama, May 7 workshops and orchesis, May 8 Involvement Theatre and jazz, and May 9 student art show.
In Wisconsin the March primary produced a near tie with Carter at 37 percent and Udall at 36 percent. A Milwaukee Sentinel poll of 1,200 voters at 15 sites showed final week decisiders leaning Udall 40 percent to Carter 33 percent, while earlier weeks favored Carter. Reagan gained on Ford in the Republican race, with Ford 55 percent to Reagan 45 percent.
