A sunny April morning drew many voters to today’s municipal election with 1,095 ballots cast by 1 p.m. as lines formed at booths. The day neared last year’s 1,097 at 1 p.m. and topped 1957 turnout, while 4,211 eligible residents comprise the potential pool. The First Ward had no local race but joined two city contests.
Preliminary figures from the city election will be available by telephone in The Monroe Evening Times starting at 7:15 p.m. The service runs until 10:30 p.m. when the final outcome is expected.
Voter counts climbed through the day with 1 p.m. tallies near 1,095. Ward contests included Sixth Ward alderman 161 votes and Second Ward for supervisor and alderman 158. First voters listed by ward included Elaine Preston and Paul Kubly. Banks and City hall remained open while taverns and county courthouse closed.
Madison reports Gov. Gaylord Nelson ties funding for a three year 52 million build program to withholding tax success. He warns legislators a 27 to 30 percent rise would lift the surtax to 47 to 50 percent if the plan is rejected, with no borrowing alternative. AFL-CIO endorses withholding and calls for repeal of the Catlin act restricting union campaign contributions.
Elmer J. Baker longtime Farm Implement News editor died at St. Clare hospital age 97 after a long illness. He lived in Chicago and retired to Warren Illinois with wife Elizabeth. Survived by son E J Baker Jr and stepdaughter Harriet Hicks. Services in Freeport with burial in Oakland Cemetery.
Gov Gaylord Nelson says he will again appoint Alderman Matt Schimenz of Milwaukee as chair of the State Public Service Commission and send the nomination to the Senate after last week’s 18 to 14 party line rejection. He has no indication Senate support will differ.
James Rasmussen awarded 2500 by Wisconsin State Supreme Court affirming a Wood County Circuit Court ruling. Rasmussen sought 26105 for head injury after a slicing tee shot by Joe Richards struck him leaving the third green at Tri City Golf Course almost three years prior.
A masked thief armed with a pistol in each hand robbed a bar early today, fired a shot into the floor to warn onlookers, and escaped with about $3100 in checks and cash.
The Associated Press notes Republicans captured three of twelve education posts in Michigan, a four year high for GOP gains and the first Democratic sweep break since 1955. Democrats held most statewide offices and both endorsed candidates for the Supreme Court led in early returns.
Gov Orval Faubus of Arkansas says reopening Little Rock high schools now seems possible but not probable. He hints he might accept some integration to restart the schools, which were closed by his proclamation last September amid desegregation disputes.
The Coast Guard Cutter Woodrush heralded the opening of the navigation season at Bayfield as it entered the harbor on Monday. It was followed by the ferry Gar-How, which docked at 6 08 p.m.
DuWayne Katz of Jefferson, a 21 year old Wisconsin 4 H and Vo-Ag dairy veteran, earns National Junior Holstein Champion Boy honor. He and Mary Ann Frautschy will attend the Holstein-Friesian Association convention in Omaha, Nebraska in June.
More than 300 attend the Monroe Future Farmers of America Parent-Son banquet at 7:30 p.m. in the new high school cafeteria. Speaker Randall Swan son of the Wisconsin farm safety specialist will address the gathering. Awards include three Wisconsin Farmer Degree plaques eight livestock and FFA trophies 25 junior and senior plaques and Green Hand pins. FFA Friends recognitions will also be given. Larry Rackow will serve as toastmaster and Monroe High School music students will perform.
In Madison Wisconsin the American cheese market shows barely steady demand rated fair with ample to excessive offerings. Prices vary by type including cheddars at 32 5 to 33 0 per 40 pounds, 34 to 35 percent moisture longhorns and singles at 34 2 to 35 4 percent, midgets 36 to 37 percent.

The firm now employs 38 and makes heavy duty oil and gas burner units for industrial use.
In New York trading, stock prices faded moderately as trading eased. High priced shares bucked the trend with sharp gains, led by Rohm and Haas. Steel stocks including Bethlehem, Republic, and Jones and Laughlin slipped slightly while U.S. Steel rose a small amount.
