The Monmouth Herald extends a warm Christmas greeting to its readers and supporters, expressing gratitude for patronage and wishing happiness during the holiday season.
The Normal, Monmouth and Independence Training Schools shut Monday due to influenza amid five dormitory cases. Faculty plan holiday travel, while ill students recover at the dormitory. Christmas at home is hoped. several staff will visit rural centers or remain at home in various locations.
In Salem last Saturday the Misses Arbuthnot and De Vore of Independence Schools served as instructors at the Marion County Institute. Monmouth Training School reports 100 percent Red Cross Christmas membership and held a demonstration at Normal Chapel to spur attendance after vacation. The Library displayed holly and fir decorations creating a festive atmosphere.
The Commercial Club met to approve routine business including road signs for Monmouth and nearby routes. City gardens on vacant lots produced 32 bushels of wheat and potatoes worth 64 and 34.85 dollars, with expenses of 22.20 leaving a net balance of 76.15 for the war effort. two-year totals show 252 net on the three plots. A mail contract to Graham & Son covers Independence to Monmouth for three years beginning January 1, and paving prospects for the road are noted.
Monmouth imposes evening curbs on gatherings while schools mostly stay open. Five dormitory cases linked to Independence prompt dormitory closure before holiday break. High school continues. transport strains as students rush home amid lingering flu fears.
