Fire Destroys Airlie Store and Dwelling

A Sunday night fire in Airlie destroyed a store building and dwelling with total loss of stock except some household goods. Prompt action by local residents saved adjacent buildings and a nearby mill. Insurance partially covered the property loss.

Tile Works Output Supports Polk County Drainage Needs

Central Tile company of Monmouth reports a busy summer producing 140000 tiles. The kilns ran at capacity as landowners in Polk county receive fired tile, with ongoing experiments on clay sources closer to the plant. Manager G A Pertridge notes ample clay and emphasizes drainage as essential in wet winters.

Community Christmas Tree Planned By Local Groups

Monmouth citizens representing churches societies schools and rural groups met at Merlan's store to organize a community Christmas tree event similar to last year. A program with singing will be held December 19 to allow Normal students to attend. Miss Parrott chaired the effort with A Wolverton and Miss Maggie Butler assisting. The tree will be placed at Main street and Monmouth avenue. Committees were named for program music decorating and tree. Ray Pitzer in New York writes he arrived safely from England aboard. He served in aviation and hoped to go to France.

Memorial services were held recently for John Braden, a soldier killed in France, in Rickie Hall. Braden is remembered by family and community for his service and sacrifice.

Dozen Deaths in One Week in Dallas Influenza Surge

In one week from December 5 to 12 Dallas reported twelve influenza fatalities with seven more on Tuesday. One victim was Cer Manning a local druggist. Despite thorough exam and quarantine, doctors cannot explain the severity though new cases fell by week end signaling a possible crisis pass. Nearby Independence and Monmouth show few or no cases with the Dormitory records praised for strict management by Miss Todd and proper dress and prompt treatment of colds.

Polk County War Savings Drive Ends with Shortfall

The 1918 pledge drive for War Savings Stamps misses its $321000 quota by about $50000. Those who signed pledge cards are urged to redeem their pledges before December 31 to push Polk County over the top. A B Starbuck, chairman of the committee.
