The BBC monitoring service reported a Tokyo broadcast quoting General Shunroku Hata, Japan's commander in chief in China, saying the East Asia war is about to take an important step in cooperation with the European war.
Berlin reports German bombers attacked the harbor and industrial district of Boston on the English North Sea coast starting fires. The High Command says North Sea patrols sank two British motor torpedo boats and damaged a third in a brief naval skirmish.
German forces pushed resistance back on a sector southwest of Stalingrad as reinforcements entered one of history’s largest battles. Front-line dispatches said German pressure also hit the city’s defenses at other points.

Ottawa reports 22 Michigan members of the Essex Scottish Regiment listed as missing from the Dieppe raid of August 19, part of a government casualty update. The adjutant general H F G Letson said Canada lost 3,350 men killed wounded or missing, with details listing next of kin for Private Robert James Ahern among those unaccounted for.
William M. Jeffers, Union Pacific president, named Rubber czar to oversee the government rubber program. Production Chief Donald M. Nelson said Jeffers would consolidate and administer efforts to alleviate shortages, with full authority over rubber matters. Jeffers pledged action and readiness to do what is necessary.
In Bedford Center New York on September 16 a 17 year old laborer Edward Haight confessed to kidnapping raping and killing two girls Helen Lynch eight and Margaret seven. He led police to Kensico reservoir where he said he disposed of Helen and then spoke of killing Margaret in nearby woods. He described tying them in a stolen station wagon and later drove to a Stamford Connecticut stop before continuing. He was booked on murder and kidnapping charges.
Prosecuting attorney Ivan A. Johnston won the Republican nomination for state senate from Gilbert I. Isbister as votes favored Johnston in Macomb and surrounding counties. Robert C. Havel won the right to challenge Sheriff Theut in November. On the Democratic side Vincent L. Fitzgerald topped Louis F. Priehg, with George P. Zuber trailing. Wilbur F. Held and Malcolm E. The Office of Price Administration announced the creation of four all purpose ration books to cover multiple commodities during the war. War Ration Book No 2 will work with coupon or point systems and can be updated as shortages arise. About 150 million copies will be printed and issued before Christmas once registration data from sugar rationing is reviewed.
Radio reports from Madagascar say Governor General Armand Annet asked for a ceasefire as British troops push within 100 miles of Antananarivo after six days of operations. London sources lacked confirmation but military circles deem a French move possible. British forces seized Diego Suarez naval base last May and aim to occupy the island to block Axis use.

Two Civil War swords once carried by Union officers and treasured by Mount Clemens families were turned over to the Salvage Committee by Mrs. Paul W. McKee. The relics will be cut up for scrap metal to aid the war effort, with anonymous owners stressing duty over sentiment. The note they sent accompanies the blades.
The U S Navy confirms the aircraft carrier Yorktown was sunk after the Midway battle from Japanese bombs and torpedoes. The 19 900 ton ship with 85 planes and 2 072 men was five years old, and salvage efforts moved it toward Pearl Harbor as the crew abandoned ship.
