Texas offshore ports win licenses for Gulf deepwater hubs
The Department of Transportation approved two Texas deepwater port projects. Texas Offshore Port Incorporated may build a port for oil supertankers 12 miles south of Freeport, while the Port of Galveston gains authority to dig a deep-draft channel and harbor. Transportation Secretary Drew Lewis noted distinct markets. Amoco must pay 1.8 million to a Brazoria County royalty owner for premature watering out oil wells after lacking a required Railroad Commission permit. Texas produced 31 percent of U.S. oil and 35.6 percent of natural gas in 1980, with oil at 2.61 a barrel and gas at 1.50 per thousand cubic feet. Royalty owners received 3.9 billion, and the industry paid 24 percent of state taxes.
