Surviving the survivalists and Monahans reflections
In 1974 during the energy crisis I attended a lecture on desert survival and considered living off the land in Big Bend. I recall a Park Ranger showing edible desert plants and water sources from cacti, which inspired me to think about primitive living before the idea faded. I compare cautious survival to the Odessa American reports of armed survivalists and examine Lord of the Flies themes on civilization’s fragility and moral order. The piece ends with a note on Alaska's name origin from Aleut roots meaning a great country.
