Ex Border Patroler crosses Divide on horseback to Canada
John Poulsen of Del Rio and Bryan Merrell of Falfurrias are riding from Del Rio toward Canada along the Continental Divide. Poulsen, retired after 25 years with the Border Patrol, says the trip may take two to two and a half years with stops for winter ranch work and prospecting. Poulsen’s wife drives ahead, cooking meals and doing laundry, as they travel only in the cool morning hours and make frequent breaks. The pair reached Monahans after leaving Imperial, staying near the county horse pens while they press on.
