Andy Pipkin announces the Texas Teenage Baseball District Three Tournament will be held in the last week of July at Perry Nunley Field thanks to a joint effort by the City County School District and Teenage League. The writer notes visiting Sand Hills Park film set and praises the cast and crew as news pictures are taken beside the movie camera.
Four color brochures for Monahans Sandhills State Park are now available at the park and the Chamber of Commerce office. The pamphlets offer a complete park description with dunes photos and are sized for mailing to out of town addresses.
Operation Clean Sweep began Monday and runs through June with officials saying progress is “very well” though much work remains. Jack Griggs warned many visitors will view the site this summer and urged broad participation to avoid bogging down alley and vacant lot cleanup efforts.
The Reverend Russell Lee Criner addressed the Ward County Republican Men’s Club at its regular monthly meeting. He defined Conservative Americanism as preserving the constitutional privileges of men and social peace, noting these liberties were earned in blood and battle by colonial forefathers.
The News urges readers to study a proposed constitutional amendment on the Sept. 7 special election ballot. It would raise the State Senate to 39 seats, create eight new districts, keep the House at 150 members, and remove the single county senator limit. If approved a special legislative session will redraw districts.
Cal Farley director of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch spoke to Mona Hans Lions Club about juvenile delinquency caused by mixed up homes. He said 370 boys at the ranch mostly come from divorced families and that prosperity leads to lack of discipline and obedience.
Negotiations for right of way along Interstate 20 progress as Monahans and Ward County seek to secure frontage roads from city to city. The United Pentecostal Church property blocks 0.75 acre, while Fern Tatum and local land pledges add to the needed tracts. If built, roads will funnel truck traffic from Judkins eastward. otherwise traffic may head to Odessa.
Monahans Rotarians held their twenty seventh officer installation at the Methodist Fellowship Hall with Wm L Kerr as master of ceremonies. Tom L White was named president and R B Croft as vice president while John Lowe and Paul Randolph were elected new directors. Two charter members returned for the anniversary, Bill Portwood and Henry Sears, now prominent figures in banking and ranching.
The News will publish only one issue the week of July 4 due to Independence Day. The regular Monday and Thursday editions are combined into a single issue on Wednesday July 7.
Ward County youth corps summer project awaits federal approval after Dallas and Washington reviews. about 125 Monahans teens signed up for an eight week term. Grandfalls Pyote and Barstow have not submitted applicant lists. original start date of June 28 is indefinitely postponed.
A Red Cross life saving course will begin Monday at the Wic kett Swimming Pool. The start date moved from June 21 to June 28 due to low registration. Bill Shoemake is the instructor. Open to anyone 16 or older in sound health who pays 75 cents for the textbook. Classes run Monday Wednesday and Friday through July 16 from 6 30 to 8 p m.
A Texas International Pictures crew films the full length movie Glorious Affair at Ward County’s white dunes this week. Director Curt Poe describes a drama love story contrasting an aging actress and a hermit as the core of the plot.
Jack Harris manager of Wilson Supply Co announced an open house Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate the new 1014 South Stockton building. The event is for customers and a few invited guests only, not the general public. The site includes 4,000 square feet of floor space and a large fenced storage area, with private viewing invited at other times.
