Maurice Crouse, vice president of the First State Bank, was appointed to the Monahans Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors replacing Bob Agnew. Agnew, Humble Oil Company district superintendent, transferred to Houston on June 1. Crouse will serve the remaining two and a half years of a three year term.
A public hearing will be held at 10 a.m. June 30 at the courthouse to gather input on proposed hunting, fishing and trapping regulations for Ward County. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, which sets seasons bag limits and methods of taking wildlife, will conduct the meeting in Ward County.
West Texas Quarter Horse owners head to Monahans for two events Friday and Saturday. Futurity offers about $10,000 in prize money with 200 horses entered and a Friday dinner awarding winners. Saturday hosts an AQHA approved show with $1,900 in prizes and $1,000 in trophies, plus an 8 p.m. West Texas Cutting Horse Association finale with about $1,500 in winnings. Entries open to registered quarter horses. fees are $10 and $15 per class.

Seventeen workers at West Texas Children's Home will receive monthly pay raises of 20 to 24 dollars retroactive to June 1. Beginning salaries were increased as the state home eliminates training steps in its pay scale. Houseparents with under nine months on the job now earn 384 dollars monthly, up from earlier steps.
Larry Cockerham 21 of 1007 S. Alice is in critical condition at John Sealy Burns Institute Galveston after a Wickett oil field accident. He was flown from Ward Memorial Hospital Odessa Tuesday. He sustained third degree burns on the body when his truck contact with power lines while attempting to retrieve fallen equipment. He is married to Norma Hicks of Monahans with a two month old baby. Hospitals may amputate two legs and an arm if his condition improves.
A Youth Employment Service was started by the Chamber of Commerce board this week to help town youths find summer jobs. Volunteers will staff the service at the Chamber headquarters located at 401 S Dwight.
Rain fell for five consecutive days in Monahans from June 13 to 17 totaling 2.74 inches, bringing the yearly total to 11.35 as of U.S. Weather Observer B. B. Rogers. A wider band of storms affected the region with hail and wind in Van Horn and Wink, while Johnny Harrison noted the storm’s soil nitrogen benefit to farmers at a Lions Club meeting.
A Tuesday morning blaze at the Super Burger at 394 Fast Sealy caused extensive damage. Fire Marshall Harold Kirby could not estimate losses or determine goods damaged as owner E. J. Commissioners court agreed to negotiate for 3.88 acres needed to clear the last major hurdle for the Interstate 20 northside service road project. District Engineer Paul Coleman said drainage plans meet Mona h a ns city requirements while officials seek price agreement or pursue condemnation if necessary. The road will run from the east Mona to the Loop Road overpass, enabling contracts this year.
Monahans Chamber of Commerce canceled plans for the annual July Fourth Fireworks Display at Sandhills State Park. Park Superintendent J A Jaynes said lack of paved parking and ongoing development would prevent handling crowd size. bulldozed sand could trap many vehicles with new camping shelters and paved parking areas.
