The Harper's Harp excerpt contrasts cows, democracy and taxation with satire noting government take, taxes and a proposed draft-wealth measure. It cites a Senate Military Affairs report urging loans from wealth to fund wars, and mentions McClave high school graduating 12 WPA editorials praising WPA projects in Monahans.
Last Friday a group of Odessa business men and their school band visited Monahans for about half an hour as part of a West Texas goodwill tour. Melvin Davis welcomed the visitors for the Monahans Chamber of Commerce and F M Gwin spoke for Odessa. The Colorado touring troubadors were also here Monday with chamber reps on an acquainting expedition.
John C. Dunagan reports from Port Isbel and Corpus Christi that he is catching a few fish but the big ones continue to elude him. He plans to return next week.
Ward County Progressive Association members vote to make the group permanent. They draft a constitution and by laws and push for Monahans improvements including paving, curbing and underpasses. They seek PWA WPA funds and aims cover road work, sidewalks and a new federal building. Town projects include tunnels at Minor street and east west underpasses.
About 125 Gulf Pipe Line workers from the Odessa district joined Monahans staff for a barbecue at the Gulf camp four miles north of town. Attendees came from Midland Odessa Wink Kermit Goldsmith and Judkins with J W Pyron noting it was the best attended social yet. Officials J F Nixon H Parrot and H M Hurst joined the gathering along with Monahans duo W R Smyres and B L Walters who organized the event.
Nineteen members of the Monahans Boy Scout troop returned Sunday night from Camp Blois in the Davis Mountains. They were accompanied by Scout masters W. A. Andrews and Rex Keeling who chaperoned the four day outing. The camp was 17 miles west of Fort Davis in a game preserve with mountain climbing and scoutcraft activities. On the return trip the group visited Carlsbad Caverns.
The Monahans and Wickett schools logged 194,559 school days with an average of 1,179 pupils enrolled. Of 1,861 students who entered the year 756 dropped out before term end, and the daily attendance reached 94 percent versus a 70 percent state average. Major Lang stated the figures.

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Potts on May 30. The infant weighed seven and a half pounds at birth.
A self styled Lone Crusader rode into Monahans en route from Palo Alto California to Washington D C for a personal talk with the President. He is about 65 years old and spoke of no specific topics for discussion with Mr Roosevelt.
The American circus began its engagement, opening performances this week. Spectators filled the tents as the troupe presented classic acts and new features, drawing families and thrill seekers from across the area.
Ward county reports 1278 wells with a daily potential of 910 591 barrels and daily allowable 30 085 barrels as of April 1 1938. Drilling totals stand at 46 with 472 producing wells completed across 20 West Texas Permian Basin counties.
City Council holds special session to review the outside settlement of the city limits lawsuit brought by Dr. W. O. Rehmeyer and F. R. Wildman. A July special court hearing is planned with preliminary papers for a substantial PWA grant expected.
The Pecos motor caravan and high school band promoted the Pecos Rodeo to be held July 2 3 and 4. The caravan toured Monahans and other large area towns yesterday morning to advertise the annual show.
Morris Gerhardt will leave Sunday for San Saba to open his own business. He has been employed at the Max Winkler store here for the past two years.
Gary L. Finch known as Peck's Bad Boy of Monahans runs the Monahans Service Station after a career from Schreiner Institute to Oil Field Lumber. Born 1908 in Mexia, he married Juliette Rathbone in 1933 and has two children Donna and Johnny.
Dr W O Rehmeyer and F R Wildman sue the city of Monahans over annexation arguing the south-side boundary was illegally added last August The suit seeks reestablishment of the original city limits and notes alleged procedural irregularities including that a majority of qualified voters in the area did not vote in favor of annexation Dr Rehmeyer says he would drop the case if a majority or even half of residents indicated willingness to be included in the city limits
Mr and Mrs Bill Thompson visited with friends in Odessa on Sunday.

Thieves Tuesday night entered the Fox Rig and Lumber Company office and took $5.40 from the cash drawer. Ralph Coatsworth, assistant manager, reported the loss. Local police were notified but no arrests have been made.
The Texas Store in Monahans opens today in the former Post Office building. Owner Jim Assad states the shop offers late style ladies ready to wear and men's haberdashery. Clerks Louise Carnes and Ruth Copeland are employed.
Mary Jo Weigers and Joe Matthews will meet Chamber of Commerce members at Monahans Motor Company showrooms to map the Ward County Fair roles this fall. Handiwork by six Ward County clubs will be on display from 10 this morning to 8 this evening, including rugs quilts and canned goods.
Miss Helen Dolores Williams and her brother Jewett Williams are visiting relatives in El Paso and New Mexico.
Hugh Strickland departed Tuesday for a two week vacation in Ft. Worth. He was joined by his mother and sister who have been visiting him the past week.
Red Sudderth visited his brother Dave Sudderth here on Thursday. The elder Sudderth, once a Monahans resident, is now living in Van Horn.
In Barstow Ward County faces a pivotal court day over the May 10 county seat removal election. The Monahans victory appears to stand unless the February 5 order is overturned. Judge John Howard is said to represent Monahans with Henry Russell and Hill Hudson for Barstow.
The County Commissioners Court approved a petition for a bond election in Ward County road precinct 3 and set a July date, according to received word.
Major Lang reported 1381 scholastics registered for the coming school term in the Monahans Wickett Independent District. The count was certified to the county judge for state submission, with an expected reduction of 30 or more as students moved to other schools after the census date.
M. A. Sanders, the Tower Theatre leasee from Lubbock, arrived to finalize operation plans and said he booked new pictures in Dallas. He will assume control Sunday, with further management details to appear next week's News. Owners Mr. and Mrs. Ray Baird plan to move to Edinburgh to run a citrus fruit farm.
Earl Earp calls a meeting of the American Legion for Tuesday night at 8. Legionnaires should assemble at the Hut across from The Monahans News for the gathering chaired by the Post Commander.
