Pecos judge J E Starley traveled to El Paso to present data to the Texas and New Mexico Railroad Commissions for a July 7 public hearing on whether the Texas and New Mexico Railroad should discontinue the Monahans to Lovington motor car service. Monahans business leaders and oil men oppose the move, arguing it would handicap local development and that the railroad should keep the train running even if unprofitable. They cite prior Interstate Commerce Commission approval to build the line and warn against abandoning a service crucial to future growth in West Texas.
The Citizens Military Camp at Ft. Bliss Texas marks Parents Day on Saturday July 8 with 86 boys from New Mexico Arizona Texas and Oklahoma. A full schedule includes parades drills field artillery demonstrations jumping events tug of war races a baseball game and an evening dance at the Hostess House. Joe D. McNeff of this city is listed as a trainee at the camp.
Mr and Mrs W T Powell spent a month in Chicago visiting the fair and have returned home.
Mrs. F. P. Pigman who visited her son John in Helmleigh near Snyder suffered a severe paralytic stroke Monday July 3. She was rushed home by ambulance to this city and her condition is listed as serious. Doctors Camp and Camp of Pecos attend and provide care for the stricken lady. The Pigman family are city pioneers with many friends awaiting word.
Masons from Monahans and other west Texas towns will join Crane City Lodge for an outdoor ceremony on Mystic Mountain of the Castle Gap range this Friday night July 7. Local attendees include Jack Wright Frank Long C D Estes Good Estes Nate Fielding H W Bland Major Owens George K Slayton John Cox H F McKinzie Otis Smith Jack Love C B Andrews and possibly others.
Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Goodwin and children return Monday from a vacation spanning Louisiana and Georgia. They visited Mrs. Goodwin’s relatives in Addis and Mr. Goodwin’s kin in Augusta. They are joined by Mr. Goodwin’s parents who will stay for a two month visit.
Rev Ira Harrison filed his regular appointment at the Baptist church here Sunday morning and evening A Wednesday night prayer meeting was organized with E R Hill as leader at the Sunday service and evening gathering
Jno Hicks of Lamar Life Insurance Co. visited from Midland this week saying business is improving. He notes he has written enough recent business to win a free trip to the World’s Fair in Chicago.
J. M. Red Cox writes from Las Vegas New Mexico about CCC life praising non military structure, good food and clothes, monthly pay from $30 to $45, and strong morale from varied entertainments. He notes strict discipline and occasional transfers or discharges for not working.
News of the death of Supt. J. A. Summerhill’s father reached the office Tuesday. The deceased, aged 81, was buried near his Grandview home. Mr Summerhill will return to his home this week.
Mr and Mrs Aaron Estes and their daughter Dorothy are visiting relatives in Breckenridge and nearby areas during a family trip detailing extended family gathering and travel locations.

The Aztec Cafe begins business in Pyote occupying the first door west of Joe Whitefield’s service station on U S Highway 80. Mrs. Joe Whitefield, a Columbia Central America native, runs the cafe and specializes in Mexican and Spanish dishes. The building has been refurnished for the new eatery inviting locals to dine.
The Oil Field Lumber Company in Monahans received a carload of Oregon timber this week. Large pieces measure about 30 feet long and 18 inches square, averaging over 100 pounds per square foot, challenging handling by local contractor Frank Long who moved them from car to yard.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bodenhoff left Tuesday for a two week vacation in Laporte Texas described as a gulf town near Houston. The Monahans Mercantile Company, managed by Mrs. Bodenhoff, will operate in her absence with Mrs. Ray Keenan in charge until their return.
Rhue Collins 34 of Royalty was fatally injured near Imperial when a tall hauling tank struck a West Texas Utilities highline. The truck accident caused him to be electrocuted after a fall. A nearby Jersey heifer also died from contact with the truck. He was a driver for W M McGee of Royalty. Interment occurred in Zephyr after services in Brownwood. Survived by a wife and two children and a sister Mrs John D Cox of Monahans.
Mr and Mrs W R Hurst and their children have come home after a four week vacation visiting Palo Pinto Fort Worth and Arlington. Jiggs fished Eagle Creek and caught nice bass while six days were spent at the Cantey Club house. He jokes about bootlegging milk for a year and mentions a large black bass with hands allegedly from Eagle Creek.
Dr. Carrie M. Cox and Mrs. Major Owens traveled to the border for Independence Day celebrations visiting El Paso and Juárez.
John Crow of Crow Bros Garage spent hours constructing a racing car, finished Sunday night, tested Monday, and entered racer 33 in Vernon West Texas races. The car uses a Hupmobile engine, four Firestone tires, and parts from other cars. Crow, family, and friends traveled to Vernon for the event with high hopes for prize money.
