Solar retrofit lowers heating needs in older Asheville home
Roger Sherman and Laurence Doxsey of Asheville, North Carolina, retrofitted a decades-old house to solar heating, covering 59 percent of the structure’s warmth. They expanded south and west glazing, installed Kalwall Sunlite Tubes with 96 cubic feet of water storage, and added Window Quilts and Roman shades to curb heat loss. A hybrid 4 by 19 foot solar collector on the outside wall channels warm air via a 250 CFM fan to bedrooms along the north wall.

IRA deadline set for April
Eligible workers have until Tuesday, April 15, to make their 1980 IRA contributions. If they file 1980 income tax returns on extension, they have until the filing date of those returns to contribute. The period helps taxpayers adjust amounts to deduct from 1980 income and avoid excess contributions. Local banks and savings and loans can provide more information on setting up IRAs.
