The Monahans American Legion Rex Baird Post No. 473 held a regular meeting at City Hall with unusually good attendance and several new members. Plans for the year were outlined and routiss business discussed. A E Lang was authorized to buy a new g and color staff for the girls organization. Commander Robinson announced weekly Tuesday meetings instead of every other week.

Five Hundred Opera Seats Installed in School Auditorium
Work completed in the high school auditorium this week with the installation of five hundred new opera seats. Seating is arranged in three tiers with the center section largest and two large aisles to the stage. Equipment for the stage has not arrived yet, but the seating capacity accommodates all junior high and high school students.
Standard Service Station Opens New Business Here
Flory McDaniel and Chester R. Smith have opened the Standard one stop station on the Pecos highway across from Tubb hall. The modern white building offers washing greasing polishing and vacuum cleaning of cars and carries tires tubes batteries and standard products. McDaniel formerly worked at Lone Star station and Smith is a drilling contractor from Grandfalls. Equipment installation expected by Jan. 10.

Carbon Plant Underway In Wickett To Employ 30 Families
Preliminary work has started on a carbon black plant at Wickett, Ward County, promising new industry. Cabot Carbon officials led by R. G. Allen and D. D. Cochrane visited Pecos, planning construction. The facility will use Gulf Production gas and aims for about 20 000 pounds output.

Jail break suspects reduced as Sharp captured
With the capture of Bob Sharp on December 29, only two of ten prisoners who escaped from Pe cos remain at large. Sheriff Irby Dyer moved Sharp from El Centro to Barstow for forgery charges, to be tried February. Leonard Wilson, jailed in Wichita, Kansas, faces car theft charges and also to be tried in February. John Carner arrested in Oklahoma City for embezzling $400 from Sunset Truck Lines, to be tried in February. A 1936 Ford sedan owned by Wesley Hodge disappeared near Monahans Motor Company. keys were left in the car and officers recovered part of the note.

Red Bluff Dam Opens Hope for Ward County Farmland Growth
Ward County growers greet the new year with confidence as the Red Bluff project becomes a reality. About 10 000 acres in the Pecos Valley are forecast for cultivation with most gains in Grandfalls district. The dam’s 30 000 acre feet of reservoir water, stored since autumn, will soon begin to be released March 1 via sluice gates.
