Local papers report a $97 150 grant approved and a treasure hunt planned by local firms. Dale Sloan opens S and S Grocery and Market in Monahans with special opening day promotions and demonstrations.
The Palace Theatre in Monahans will debut Sunday December 22 under O K Theatres. Manager Mr Berg says the new building beside the Texas Theatre will offer a modern layout with a sharply inclined floor for clear sightlines. The existing structure will serve as an auxiliary house on weekends holidays and bank nights.
Ward county voters will decide the liquor question in a special election on December 18. The state interpretation allows precincts to vote dry in a wet county, but a countywide vote against liquor bars all sales in the county. Ward is currently dry under local option prior to national prohibition.
Monahans High School seniors present a three act adaptation of Little Women by Ravold from Alcott. Show starts at 8 pm with 15 and 35 cent admission. Cast features Jane Jones Dorothy, Florence Coupland Meg, Mary Kay Harrison Amy, Naivaline Hurst Beth, Mary Nell Coggin Marmee, L. E. Frazier Laurie, Bert Carter John Brooke, Wayne Strickland Mr March, Stewart Winkler Professor Bhaer.
Last Sunday night the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts held a service at the Christian church. The bugler Stanley Wright blew revels and taps, flags were paraded, the pledge and oath were recited, songs sung, and Alvin Lee played a piano solo. Stanley Wright and Lloyd Lewis signaled with semaphore flags as Rev. T. T. Rowe preached on Scouting.
A group from Monahans attended court and conducted banking business in Barstow this week. Names include Fern Tatum Earl West Carl Estes Guber Estes F R Wildman Mrs Carl Estes and Jimmie Terrel.
Dr. E. J. Cook has sold a half interest in City-County Hospital to Dr. Geo M. Bandau. A crew of carpenters is adding space on the north side for an expanded enclosure with plans for X ray and sterilizers and room to enlarge as needed.
The News announces a Christmas Edition next week featuring Monahans and Ward county history plus modern coverage. Ads, greetings, and Christmas merchandise will fill pages and copies go to homes, oil camps, and distant readers. submissions encouraged with a Monday deadline.
Mrs J A Summerhill announces a pupil recital at the Baptist church on Tuesday evening at 7 30. The program includes songs readings piano and violin numbers with Santa Claus presenting gifts to performers. No admission charge. Rev T T Rowe spoke to Pecos Christian church youth Wednesday evening.
Dr. Robert Harris chief field surgeon of Gulf Production Co. of Houston Texas visited Monahans on Tuesday. Dr Geo M Bandall and wife, close friends of Dr Harris, were guests of the Gulf surgeon at Jimmy's Cafe for lunch Tuesday.
Tommy Sibly wed in a Fort Worth ceremony last Saturday afternoon. He left Monahans Thursday afternoon and returned with his bride Sunday.
In county court this week Edwin Woody and Ed Ross faced charges of establishing a lottery after three slot machines were found operating in a back room of the Oasis last Saturday night. Deputies Keenan and Cummins reported the discovery around 2 AM. Sheriff Dyer held warrants for both men, with Ross charged as owner and Woody for operating the illegal machines.
Local merchants and the Monahans Lions Club launch a Treasure Hunt and popularity contest beginning Friday December 14. Women may enter on ballots with every purchase. the top voter wins 25 dollars and presides over prize distribution December 23 24. A Lions Christmas Benefit at Dan Tubb Hall December 17 features dances and contests to raise funds for clothing and food for the needy.
Plans for Monahans new high school revert to original designs after Public Works Administration grants of 57150, bringing total funds to 111150. Earlier a 54009 site plan led by David S Castle in Abilene was halted, with construction delayed until contracts in January could proceed. The restored plan centers on a modern building with a substantial gymnasium and hardware upgrades.
Prominent Monahans resident N. M. Huffaker died yesterday at 1 30 PM in the Abilene Baptist Sanitarium after a fourth operation since Armistice Day. Funeral services will be held in Waco this afternoon. He is survived by his widow, two children Jerry Ann and a 3 year old son, his Oregon parents, and a Portland, Oregon, sister. Huffaker came to Monahans in 1929 from Midland and worked as a gauger for Gak Production Co.
Lang A E superintendent of the school and Rev T T Rowe pastor of the First Christian church in Monahans attended the Buffalo Trails council meeting in Big Spring last Monday. Plans for the coming year and district reports were discussed. The council will hold its annual meeting in Big Spring January 20 and a field executive will be hired to assist Mr Williamson. Rowe announced a training school in Monahans with Thursday meetings at 7:30 PM and certificates for attendees who complete the training.
Mrs. Fred Landers and her twin sons Ted and Ned, with Miss Madell Frazier, were business visitors in Pecos last Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. A E Alter of Arizona are visiting Mr Alter's sister Mrs. V H Guy.
Mrs Bill Davis and her daughter Winnie Frances Vaughn were seen spending Tuesday morning shopping in Pecos.
Born to Tom Bullock and Waite on December 7 an eight and a half pound girl. Born to Dan Horton and Witt em on December 10 an eight and a half pound boy.
Practice sessions for basketball are held daily under Coaches Thomas and Greer. New uniforms have been ordered and will arrive in a few days. The squad will be virtually the same as the football squad.
