Monahans Lions travel to Wink High School for a six oclock game against the Wink Lions. Bill Powell leads Monahans while locals expect a large crowd to support the visitors in a game billed as a battle between experienced players and the Wink lineup.
At the Monahans Lions club meeting two new members Tate Dodd and Shek Hogg joined. The group voted to purchase library books for Monahans primary to seventh grade, totaling 175 dollars, to be placed in the school library.
County Judge T H Neel visited Monahans on Saturday of the previous week, staying for a brief stop in the West Texas town.
Local employers in Monahans adopt the blanket NRA code, reducing hours per worker and adding staff. Most stores have signed, with several preparing to join, boosting purchasing power for residents as first paychecks arrive. Signatories include People's Variety Store, Firestone Service Station, Monahans Mercantile, City Barber Shop, Manhattan Cafe, Crow Bros., and others.
Mr and Mrs R G Gray of Winston New Mexico arrived for a weeks long visit with relatives and friends in Monahans and Ward county. Gray previously headed Monahans schools expanding to 14 units with two Spanish additions under Mr Covin. Also noted are Mr and Mrs Dave Sudderth visiting Pecos and attending the Pecos Golf tournament.
Doctors Cook and Rehmeyer start free health screenings for all school children in Monahans and Ward county. Parents may bring or send their child between 1 and 6 pm daily except Sundays to receive a thorough check of teeth tonsils ears eyes and related health notes on a card at no charge.
The pastor Ira Harrison appeals for full attendance at both Sunday services urging all to fulfill their duty and be present.
Cotton and His Pickers will provide music for the opening dance and barbecue at Crystal Wells on Thursday night August 3. The Ward County band is among the region’s popular dance orchestras. R T Stribling invites visitors for a large barbecue and opening crowd at the open air pavilion on Highway 80 eleven miles west of Pyote.
The Womans Missionary Society hosts a 3 p m program at the Baptist church on Monday August 7 with hostess Mrs C N Smithers. It features hymn singing Bible study a sermon derived from John 1 36 42 and a social hour. Members listed include Mrs White Mrs Wright Mrs Johnson Miss Smithers Mrs Hudler Mrs Bailey Mrs Shanks and Mrs Garner with prayers for Europe and Palestine.
A. F. Watts and family left Saturday night for Fordyce Arkansas where Mr Watts was summoned to attend the bedside of his sister Mrs Joe S Wilson who is very ill They will also visit Little Rock Eldorado and return via Shreveport Arkansas and expect to be away about two weeks.
Fort Stockton attorney Judge R D Blaydes announces candidacy to fill the seat left vacant by the death of B Frank Haag. The special election on August 26 covers thirteen counties including Pecos Presidio and Midland. Blaydes promotes West Texas development and farmers’ interests.
A large crowd watched Wink Lions Club fall 19 to 13 to Monahans Lions in a Thursday soft baseball game at the local park. The scoring included Wink three runs in the first and five in the third, while Monahans posted ten in the first and added four and five in later innings. A return game was set for this afternoon at Wink.
J A Dowdy owner of the Oasis Hotel is applying a full exterior stucco coat this week. A crew works at the site, preparing and applying the stucco to enhance the building’s outward appearance. The interior already modern, and the finish is said to help keep the interior cooler in hot weather.
F R Wildman, active builder in Monahans for 18 months, is constructing a tourist camp on west Sealy Avenue. A two story office with upstairs living quarters will measure 20 by 33 feet. Eight cabins with individual garages and modern conveniences are under construction, each cabin 12 by 20 feet in size.
J. E. Westover moves his garage and repair shop from east of the Worth Hotel to a building on east Sealy Avenue, built for the business. He states he is now better equipped and invites friends to visit the new location.
F W Elliott promoting the Red Bluff townsite in Reeves county has obtained U S Patent Office copyright giving him sole right to use the name Red Bluff in connection with the townsite project. He is protected against infringement by any person or corporation in uses related to the promotion.
McCamey resident Berry died Friday after a slugging here Thursday. J. W. Hillman Pete Hutton and G. L. Laferty are jailed without bail in the case. A court of inquiry was delayed due to the district attorney’s absence but may be held at Rankin tomorrow morning.
Evangelist Claude Kele of Dallas concluded a series of revival meetings at the Church of Christ last Thursday night adding nine members to the congregation. It was the second revival held since the new church building was completed, and locals praise the event as the more successful of the two. Mr and Mrs Kele made many friends in Monahans and hope to return.
Prohibition leaders in Austin allied with Sen Morris Sheppard to press repeal as 3.2 beer and wines may face a statewide vote on August 26. National dry forces gather with James A. Cross and Ira Landreth among invitees. Dan Moody urges business support for the effort.
Lampasas Texas enjoyed three years with no business failures. The 120 firms relied on farming cattle and sheep. Bankers credit steady finances to debts tied to 12 cent wool now fetching 30 cents.
The Texas state board of education on Monday set the scholastic apportionment for 1933 34 at 16 per capita based on 1 570 365 scholastics.
Mrs George H Rhodes is on the sick list this week and her friends wish her a speedy recovery.
