Street Gas Burner Trial Chooses Watkins Over Naptha

After a thirty day test in Moline the committee reports the Illinois Street Gas Co. Watkins burner best for street lighting and recommends a fifty lamp contract at 25 dollars per lamp per year replacing Shepherd naptha burners. The city also notes existing coal gas lamps at 40 dollars per lamp and discusses overall costs and future extension.

Tragedy near Edgington Ends in Double Suicide

A brother shot his sister on her wedding day and then killed himself in Edgington county. The fatal scene left Melinda Jane Robbins 22 and Hezekiah Lee Robbins 20 dead or dying as authorities ordered coffins and the coroner conducted an inquest. The story notes a troubled engagement with Thomas Richards, a widow from Andalusia, and a rushed, tragic ending at the Robbins home as the couple prepared for marriage and a license in Rock Island.

About midnight Tuesday a violent windstorm and heavy rain drenched the area. Streets became nearly impassable as gutters overflowed and trees were uprooted or branches torn off in Rock Island. In Davenport a harvester was toppled across a field near Seki.

Burglars Try to Steal Pocket Book at Doctor's Home

Burglars entered Dr Gordon's residence near Brooks crossing around midnight Tuesday climbing over a porch and entering a room where Mr Straw the Doctor's assistant slept. Straw's pocket book containing about 87 was taken but recovered and the culprits fled out the window. no arrests. Dr Gordon thanked neighbors for help during the search.
