Wilbert Reed 43, born Bellefontaine Ohio, walked from Burlington to Monmouth and surrendered to Sheriff Turnbull as a deserter from the regular army. He served three years in the Philippines, rejoined Battery M Fifth Artillery, Fort Wadsworth, deserted July 1900, and had wandered the country under threat of exposure and loss of wages. He prefers punishment to constant fear.
