Mokena Assistant Superintendent Named First County Aide

H James Wrath of Mokena has been named first assistant county superintendent of schools and will assume duties July 1. Wrath resigns from Arbury Hills after three years. Boyd R. Bucher appointed county superintendent, succeeding Verne Crackel who becomes state assistant superintendent July 1. Wrath is 38, born in Kenosha, with Navy service in 1945 and Army 1950 1952.

Communities Urged To Let Freedom Ring Across Illinois

Governor Kerner calls on city and village officials to organize Fourth of July bell ringing. Churches and public buildings are asked to ring bells for two minutes starting at 1 pm. The effort, conceived by Eric Sloane and Eric Hatch, has gained nationwide adherence for two years.

Agricultural Achievement Award Goes To Don Smego

Don Smego wins the 1965 DeKalb Agricultural Accomplishment Award for outstanding scholarship and a strong vocational agriculture program. He led Lincoln Way FFA as president this year, earned top honors in a farm safety section, and has notable swine and poultry projects. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Smego and farms west of Frankfort.

L W Singers Win Roles in SIU Musical

Four local high school singers from Lincoln Way, Linda Montgomery, Sandra Pearson, Dennis Cappel, and Stephen Stauffenberg, were chosen for parts in The Flower Drum Song at Southern Illinois University. They trained at a three week Music and Youth camp in Carbondale June 27 to July 17. Performances are July 16 and 17 with tickets by mail at SIU Music Productions.

Herbert Cooper 81 Dies in Illinois Overnight

Herbert Cooper 81 of R 1 Mokena died Sunday June 20 at Silver Cross Hospital after a lingering illness. Born July 2 1883 in Orland township he lived in the area all his life and was a retired farmer. Survived by daughters Jeanette Knieriem and Mildred Ferris a brother George and six grandchildren. Preceded by wife Jennie in 1960 two brothers and a sister. Funeral services were held June 23 at 2 p.m. from Hirsch Memorial Chapel Tinley Park. interment Orland Memorial Cemetery.

Mokena Plans Fourth of July Community Celebration

The Mokena Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club sponsor a three day Fourth of July festival July 3 to July 5 with an old time auction led by Norman Strasenberg on Saturday night. Items for auction may be dropped at a trailer near Grey Real Estate, with 90 percent of sale proceeds to the seller. The parade assembles July 4 at 1 pm on Carpenter Street and proceeds through town ending at Community Park where children’s games and water ball fights await. Monday features a Little League game and a large fireworks display with prizes including a color TV. Miller Amusements will operate four rides each afternoon, and local booths will line the park. Also noted, four Lincoln-Way FFA members received the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree for community service during a June meeting: William Smith, Harlow Jensen, Frank Goetschel, and Harold Cooper.

Curve West Of Frankfort Claims Another Victim

Wilbur L. Bowman 43 of Joliet died in a U S 30 crash near Frankfort while traveling east. His car veered into the westbound lane and struck a tandem truck driven by Donald Knoch 49 of Fort Madison Iowa. Bowman, pinned in wreckage, suffered a broken neck and multiple fractures. He was to be promoted to district manager and open an office at Park Forest. Survivor is his wife Rose. Funeral services held in Joliet.
