Mobile will host a new concrete ship plant planned as an eight ship unit employing 1,800 to 2,000 men. W M Clemens announced arrangements made in Washington and said the site and resident engineer will arrive soon. Work could start by Oct 1 with eight ships under construction concurrently.
Forty thousand textile workers went on strike in New Bedford Massachusetts as government contracts lapsed. More than fifty four mills shut down while workers demand a 20 percent wage increase. Mills offer 15 percent but refuse to meet the demand.
A statement to mobile light customers signed by Theodore K. Jackson says the Alabama supreme court upheld the city rate contract so the company will refund the difference between contract rates and rates charged since February 1 1918. Checks are mailed with the notices.
The Gulf States Portland Cement Company of Delaware gains ownership of the former W. G. Mitchell cement plant at Demopolis with R. C. Lubeina as president and Harry Abbot as secretary. Enlargement may add over a half million dollars and boost daily output to 1500 barrels or more. The Mobile ship plant will likely use much of the Demopolis output, but the local plant will not rely on it for cement.
Boston reports a U S warship is towing a German submarine into Boston harbor. Officials had not confirmed the claim by press time, but distant stations broadcast the report and it is given credence locally.
Willie Preston, 20, charged with attempting to interfere with legal process, jailed for contempt as the Pinto Island labor dispute at Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company spills into the recorder's court. Thirteen black workers arrested on unlawful assembly faces June 6, with bond set at 600 dollars. Preston may face federal charges for trying to prevent workers from returning to the shipyard.
The British line advanced at two points today and raids netted 213 prisoners and several machine guns, according to the official war statement from London dated June 3.
Members of Mobile Post No 2 G A R held exercises at National Cemetery to honor Union soldiers. Raphael Semmes Camp No 11 of the United Confederate Veterans aided. graves of Union and Confederate soldiers were decorated. A guards squad and a bugler blew taps and fired a salute.
