A tramp in Centralia Missouri attacked a servant girl after she refused food. He was arrested and jailed, then escorted out of town and warned to never return. A vigilante group beat him in a secluded grove before ordering him away.
Macon August 15 Justice Dalson asked Abe West how to plead on a bigamy charge brought by J C Joiner brother of Wests second wife. West offered guilty if court could send him with next recruits to the Philippines. The judge said no authority to grant such order and West was sent back to jail. Wests first wife was Emma Byrd of Canterville Missouri. He deserted her and three years later married Miss Joiner of La Plate.
The Sunday School of Fourth Street Methodist Church plans its annual picnic Thursday at Daes kin's grove one mile east of town. Members and friends are invited. Conveyances will be provided for Sunday School members, leaving the church about 9 o'clock.
The remains of Miss Stella Poeun, who died in Denver on August 10, arrived in Moberly today at 1 50. Lutermont was bad in McKinziy grave yard.
The booth privileges of the Moberly fair will be sold to the highest bidders at the fair grounds next Saturday afternoon August 1 at 2 p.m. President Au Disne s, Secretary Jas RB Lownnn.
Missouri schools announce state certificate exams conducted by State School Superintendent Carrington. Dates include Springfield August 25 26 Carthage August 28 29 Columbia August 29 30 Kansas City August 29 30 St Joseph August 30 31 and Macon City August 31 September 1. Exams run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
In Paris Missouri the Monroe county Teachers Institute began its third week with 128 teachers present. State Superintendent William I Carrington spoke on School Management Monday afternoon. Paris was chosen as the next meeting site for the institute to start on the first Monday in August 1900.
Albert Kerr was arrested yesterday on suspicion of breaking into Stoker's village works Sunday night and stealing a revolver watch and other items. He confessed to the crime and returned the stolen articles. Kerr was an employee of Mr. Stoker's factory.
Admiral Dewey remained on board the flagship Olympia which arrived from Naples at Leghorn. The captain of the vessel received the party and officials in his cabin as the ship docked.
Miss Esther Watson attended the Y B S OC I convention in Detroit and has been visiting in Cairo before returning home this afternoon.
Last night about 11 near South Fourth street a prowler tried to enter J N Jennings' home by the kitchen transom. He slipped and fell through the glass, injuring his hand and leaving a bloodstain. Police traced him to Nan Collins’s home in Moberly. he confessed to jealousy and claimed the cook was his rival. He was released after Jennings advised it.
In Chicago a plan to use part of the old Evanston Methodist church for a bootleg whiskey sale is reported. The building, famed as a Lincoln speech site and a center for abolitionist and suffrage figures, has stood unoccupied in recent years.
A cyclone struck Redfield located 18 miles north of this city on the Tron Mountain round Sunday afternoon. The Methodist and Baptist churches were wrecked, several houses and cabins blown away, and fences vanished for seven miles. The cyclone measured about 200 feet in width and came after heavy rain, with several injuries reported.

Simeon T. Oliver died at his country home four and a half miles southeast of Moberly yesterday at 8 30 p m aged 81 years. Born July 30 1818 in Fayette County Kentucky he moved to Missouri at age fourteen settling in Randolph County. He married Margaret Pyle November 26 1849 and had thirteen children nine preceded him. He leaves a wife and four children two sons and two daughters plus many friends. A devout Christian and Master Mason funeral services under the Masonic lodge will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow at the family residence conducted by Rev. T W Baker Interment in the family burying ground.
Dick Kitchen, a Black man described as insane last week, was taken to the poor farm yesterday afternoon for care and confinement.
A series of questions asked of Evangelist Brysch will be answered tonight with a sermon addressing "How is the Heart Changed." Audiences were larger last night and order outside the tent showed improvement.
Four Black individuals, three men and one woman, were arrested Sunday at Randolph Springs amid a public safety incident. City authorities reported the event and began routine processing.
