A local shop proclaims its ambition with a concise motto Our motto is has and will be to make this Mitchell's Leading Dry Goods Store. Lines of progress are shown as the business grows its reach and promise daily.
Dakota University again opens its doors to South Dakota youth with a growing enrollment and a strong faculty. New teachers include Miss Myrtle R. Lee and Prof. Blodgett among others, as classes begin with 195 students and plans for a large fall term. A bachelor club party featured inventive decor using butter tubs and a push car ride to the venue, with dances and a lively program.
The Bach elor's club hosted a first fall event with W E Turner offering a waxed 50 by 100 foot pine floor and a butter and egg themed decor. About sixty couples joined the grand march led by Turner and Miss Nona Prescott, as the State Juvenile Band played.
The Washington correspondent of the Minneapolis Journal says President McKinley will visit South Dakota on his western trip and Mitchell is to be honored. The itinerary includes Wahpeton to Aberdeen, meeting the first South Dakota regiment, then Redfield Huron Wolsey Mitchell Sioux Falls Parker Canton Sioux City Vermillion and Elk Point.
A three year old Hannett boy set fire to a haystack behind Mr. Hannett’s home sparking a blaze that destroyed the stack and two barns, one Hannett’s and one owned by Arthur Wright. About 20 tons of hay burned. the Hannett barn insured for 100 dollars. Fire water pressure suffered from open hydrants, with locals blaming the city engineer and awaiting action against offenders.
Jake French reports his 120 acre farm near Wessingtono has the best corn crop since moving to the state. He expects yields of at least 40 bushels per acre and plans to feed hogs this winter to turn the crop into money. He recently went to buy stock hogs for his farm.
Congressman Gamble recounts the settlement of disputes within the First South Dakota volunteers after letters by Senator Pettigrew caused distress aboard the Sheridan. Officers retract their charges, reconcile, and plan muster out by early October with troops returning to Sioux City.
At the close of the W R C regular meeting on Friday evening a rising vote thanked the clever young ladies who performed in the benefit for the W C held Sept 12. The young ladies proved themselves versatile and gracious comedians and the organizers praised them.
