In Stanley county ranchmen adopt a new plan to end cattle and horse theft. Led by A. J. Hauge, they offer a $500 reward for arrest and conviction of thieves, hoping rustling will drop like in neighboring Lyman county.
The past week was generally dry with light showers and a few foggy mornings delay threshing. Frost occurred on Monday the 4th, injuring corn foliage locally in Hand County. Wheat yields are variable with some smut and quality concerns, oats and barley perform well though barley discolored. Corn maturing well, late crops may escape frost damage with favorable weather ahead. potatoes, flax, millet strong with regional rot in low land. haying advancing. pasture outlook good though drier in southern counties.
Henry Goldbeck a Deuel county farmer in Sioux Falls South Dakota on September 14 suffered a paralysis while mowing. He toppled onto the mower and was found only in the afternoon after lying across the equipment for hours. He could not move or summon help and surgeons fear for his recovery.
Secretary of Agriculture James S. Wilson spoke to a vast audience at the state fair grounds in Huron. Governor Elrod dedicated the grounds and buildings for state fair use with United States Senator Kittredge among the dignitaries on the platform. Attendees hailed exhibits across all departments as the finest yet seen in this northwest region.
Milbank South Dakota Sept 11 August Belmont and companions hunting at Peever for a week had poor luck as birds were scarce. Belmont plans to lease township land for next year and protect it with wardens. He refused to discuss politics regarding Bryan. Belmont traveled in his private car Mineola with staff and French chef.
Engineers of the Reclamation Service expect construction on the Williston Nelson and Buford Trenton pumping projects to begin next spring. A September 18 consulting board at Williston will review designs as surveys confirm feasibility and landowner impacts.
Washington reports the Hiomestake Mining company has applied to the forest service for selling a vast bull pine timber in the Black Hills forest reserve South Dakota. The bid covers 12,000,000 feet of green timber 1,300 cords of green wood 3,000,000 feet of insect damaged timber 3,000 cords of affected wood and 6,000 cords of other woods. If approved this would become one of the largest timber sales under current rules.
In Madison South Dakota on September 11 a court hearing led to Irving C Smith the oldest son of Mr and Mrs Smith being named guardian for his retired millionaire father The estate is valued at about 75000 in real and personal property and over the years the elder man has donated about 30000 acres of land valued at more than 600000 to relatives and others This guardianship shifts control of the remaining estate to the son.
In Sully County near Pierre South Dakota farmers push fast corn cutting as the crop fully matures yielding about 40 bushels per acre. Threshers report wheat at 15 to 20 bushels per acre and oats around 60 bushels. Hay and forage crops are excellent, placing Sully county farmers in good standing for the year.
Potters county reports threshing underway with seven steam rigs and several horse power machines. A. W. Clark near Gettysburg threshes twelve acres of wheat yielding 510 weight 4417 bushels per acre from a fifty acre field. James Gidley six miles south reports fifty bushels per acre of spelt. Corn safe from frost and a good crop.

Aberdeen South Dakota September 8 William Barker known as Doddes was bound over to the circuit court on a charge of murder in the first degree for the killing of Lee Zook at Hecla.
Miss May Bunning daughter of Humboldt residents met a horrible death when her clothing caught fire while preparing a meal. She ran outside three times encircling the house in an unsuccessful attempt to extinguish the flames. Physicians reported extensive burns over nearly her entire body and she died after hours of suffering in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Printers at Brown and Saenger H C Sessions Sons Will A Beach and W G George walk off. About twenty to twenty five workers affected. Demand for eight hour day starting January first rejected by managers. First major strike in Sioux Falls history risks escalation.
Mrs. John Weddell wife of a well known Kingsbury county farmer killed herself at her home northwest of Arlington South Dakota on Sunday afternoon She drank about two ounces of carbolic acid and died before a doctor arrived Authorities suggested a temporary insanity without known domestic trouble as a cause for the act
A South Dakota group led by Secretary of State D. D. Wipf organized a company to develop natural gas found near Marion Junction and Silver Lake. After landowner agreements, wells and piping are planned for immediate setup with aims to supply nearby towns for lighting and heating within a month.
St Louis report says South Dakota millionaire Harris Franklin and Mrs Sadie Rohr of Deadwood announced their engagement after a six week acquaintance. They met in Atlantic City where Mrs Rohr stayed in the same house as Franklin’s party. Rohr, daughter of prominent St Louis Jewish socialite Amelia Arnold, returns to St Louis.
Madison S D Sept 12 local authorities seek Frank Smith wanted in Clark county on attempted murder charges. In Woodland township at the old Perry Robinson farm Smith shot John Vick twice injuring his shoulder and rib. Vick escaped with the team and fled toward Clark as officers pursue the suspect.
Burglars entered the First National Bank at Custer South Dakota and blew the safe, taking several thousand dollars on September 12. The bank’s entire on hand cash was stolen.
Dead Horse, returning from Buffalo Bill’s show in Europe, wore checked Paris trousers and bright shoes to a Sioux dance at Pine Ridge. Chiefs ordered he not appear in such clothes again or be excluded from future meetings and dances.
Wild hop vines along central and western South Dakota streams bear prolifically this year. Observers see potential wealth for locals who cultivate them, noting streams near Pierre show heavy growth and that wild hops could be improved with care.
In Aberdeen South Dakota September a suspect tied to a box case has been identified. The murdered Morrisville man was shot fatally yesterday. Parkman faced a legal skirmish over a hunting warrant and bail. John Olson a farmer near Lyons SD died after a roof fall accident. He slipped on the barn roof and was killed instantly.
A Cheyenne river country correspondent criticizes an Indian agent for allowing Indians to attend Fourth of July celebrations off the reservation where dances and liquor were involved. Agency officials say some Indians had passes to a religious gathering and dances, and leaders remain in the guard house. a squad of Indian police accompanied the current Lake Andes convocation to prevent repeat incidents.
The Cheyenne River reservation census shows 2526 Indians, up 53 from last year. Only four were births over deaths. the remaining 49 come from transfers from Pine Ridge, where they stayed since the 1889-90 winter outbreak.

Miss Lilah Older’s year of study and a month since graduation from Super School of Oratory culminated in a well received elocution recital at the Methodist church under Ladies Aid Society. Her program featured Ner Cuban and selections from If It Were the mnawois and the scene from period. The event drew a good audience and highlighted the speaker’s growth and preparation.

Buffalo county investigators probe two forgery cases involving farm land transfers. Authorities fear an organized gang uses fraudulent deeds and a bogus abstract signed by Dora L. Newhouse to transfer land to innocent buyers. The case cites a U S patent to George Hickman and irregular transfers lacking a proper seal.
