Freeman Knowles Addresses Populist Platform Critique

Freeman Knowles, Populist candidate for congress, spoke to a near full house at the courthouse, with John Colvin presiding and W. H. Saul providing a campaign song. He framed his critique around two old parties, railroads, land ownership, money, and the current state administration, arguing that new laws do not fix human faults and criticizing the McKinley tariff and national banking while praising some Populist and Omaha platform ideas. He warned against Populist repudiation talk in Kansas and Waiteism in Colorado and noted wealth concentration, wage debate, and the west’s borrowing from the east. He favored government ownership of railroads and fiat money, while acknowledging limits of his views on land titles and royalties, and he criticized Republican candidates in the Black Hills as biased.
