Pierre, 8. D. Doane Robinson of the state historical department highlights Big Bend as a site for hydro electric development. He argues an open cut across the neck is impractical due to flood risk and cost, proposing a 5000 foot tunnel at about $50 per foot to yield around 2000 horsepower with a total project cost near $350,000. The plan would divert river flow through an open ditch, offering a reasonable per horsepower cost compared to Keokuk.
