E T Stoner of Sun Flower stock farm two miles north of Huron unearthed gold bearing quartz sand three feet below the surface. Assayer at Sturgis reports ore worth 80 dollars per ton with silver 14 dollars per ton. An expert miner will inspect the field as promising depths are anticipated.
Sioux Falls area banks brace for yeggmen with new safeguards. Dell Rapids and Hartford organize night watchmen and a signal code to alert nearby towns, while Sioux Falls deposits shift to local banks as special reserves. Citizens prepare to mobilize against bank robbers.
Reports from Philips South Dakota describe a surge of settlement with land relinquishments selling for 400 to 600 dollars and deeded quarter sections at 1 000 to 3 000 dollars. The Missouri River Black Hills extension boosts stock shipments and promises further railroad development through Deadman valley to Ash Creek and beyond.
The Interstate Commerce Commission upheld railway rates as reasonable for traffic from Chicago and Missouri River points to Lead South Carolina. Lead, S. Clement Saunders, a driver for the Sioux Falls branch of Val Blatz Brewing, committed death by his own action by hanging himself from a warehouse rafter this morning while temporarily insane.
Arlington South Dakota reports a town built in summer and moved by wheel to Lake Norden after the Dakota Central line shifted west. Businesses including hotel general stores and a concert hall were left behind as the settlement at Lake Poinsett was deserted, with only cellars marking the former site.
The South Dakota state board of agriculture plans aggressive work for the next fair in Huron. About 15000 dollars will be spent on buildings and improvements at the state fair grounds. A new Bash building will house speed horses and at least three purses of 1000 dollars each are planned.
The Pierre and Fort Pierre Bridge Railway company received its first car, number one. In two weeks a regular service will begin between Pierre and Fort Pierre across the Missouri River, operating from the new depots before completion, with through traffic moved from the old station until early next year.
Ed Wallace the Rapid City man who shot and killed Frank Graves and wounded his brother John Graves ten days ago is bound over without bail to await the grand jury. John Graves may not live long. Wallace has hired three top local attorneys to defend him.
Pierre November 14. State Mine Inspector Treweek reports in his annual governor’s report that South Dakota gold production is one million dollars lower than the previous year, without specifying exact figures.
Arlington South Dakota November 14 A new paper has been started at Hall a newly platted town fifteen miles south of Watertown on the Dakota Central railroad. EK Warner editor and proprietor The railroad lacks ten miles of completion and may not reach Hall until early next year Hall lies at Hamlin county center with promoters hoping to move the county seat from Castlewood to Hall due to accessibility factors.
Orient South Dakota November 14 John Withee a prominent local farmer found a long lost cousin while perusing a telephone directory after a new line was installed in his house. He called D V Hall whose name appeared in the directory and within moments both families learned of their kinship. Both families had lived nearby for eight years without knowing their relation.
Sportsmen in northeastern South Dakota prepare for the great wolf roundup to exterminate wolves threatening sheep raisers. Phil Fox of Durand Wisconsin will bring his wolf hounds to assist. Sheep owners pay 2 cents per head to cover the expense, as teams comb a wide area to locate and kill every wolf.
Vermillion South Dakota November 11 Professor C M Young dean of the Dakota state university and his son rushed by automobile to Sioux City to save his little boy Roland who had swallowed a sand burr that became lodged in his vocal cord and choked him. The burr was removed by a Sioux City specialist with a steel instrument and a nipper like tool after no operation was needed. The boy had tried to remove the burr from his woolen mittens and drew it into his windpipe while blowing it out of his mouth.
Bryant South Dakota November 11 The South Dakota Central railroad from Sioux Falls to Watertown bypassed Dolph leaving the town doomed. Thirteen buildings will be moved to Norden and Hayti while the rest are placed on wheels and hauled away as the town disappears.
The United States land office in Pierre S D reports October as the busiest month since establishment. Homestead filings outside Lower Brule reached 657 with 180 on that tract, plus eighty soldiers declarations and six reservoir entries, totaling 851 filings. Cash entries were 1380 with twenty seven final homestead proofs, transferring over a town ship’s title to private owners. Contest business exceeded 600, with locators active.
Roland Mather aged 13 son of F. M. Mather of Armour fell asleep atop a hay load and rolled off becoming unconscious. He suffered a fracture of the right arm and leg and a severe skull contusion with abrasions over the right eye.
Sioux Falls, S. D., Nov. 11. The Minnehaha County Bar Association petitioned Judge Bailey to appoint a guardian for Mrs. Julia Ann O Grady who is charged with murdering her husband Joan O Grady. The bar argues she cannot manage her affairs after transferring property including $1,000 in bonds to attorney George W. Egan. Judge Bailey granted the petition and will appoint a guardian. Notice was given by Attorney Egan that the action would be appealed and a $250 bond required.
Henry Hendrickson of Trent S D being held in Moody County jail on a first degree murder charge was admitted to bail of 15000 in circuit court on the application of Aiken and Judge. Bail bond to be furnished today release expected by night. Hendrickson accused of shooting Bradfield a Trent pharmacist on Halloween night amid liquor dispute.
Milbank South Dakota November one State's Attorney Bentley acts on complaints by local men by arresting a hotel proprietor for running a gambling house and selling liquor on Sunday. At preliminary hearing he is bound over to circuit court next week. Saloonkeepers ordered to remove obstructions from front windows and close promptly at 11 o'clock. The lid is on to stay.
Belle Fourche South Dakota reports prairie fires and weak demand lowering cattle prices. Farmers north of town planned fall shipments but hold stock over due to the market slide. Ranchers from the north ranges faced delays as fires continued for weeks, hindering shipments toward Belle Fourche.
The eight inch artesian well project in Huron South Dakota has been halted at 1,123 feet after granite was struck. A heavy water flow was found but pressure remained around twenty pounds. The city plans another attempt near the river with a two inch auger to locate a satisfactory flow before sinking an eight inch well. The abandoned effort cost about $5,000.
Arlington reports Miss Matilda Staungland daughter of Hans Staungland a prosperous Hetland farmer drank carbolic acid in the early hours and died before help could come. She was about 20 and ill health preceded the tragedy with despondency or mistaken bottle. She was a favorite among acquaintances.
Vale South Dakota November 9. A fireman on the Northwestern road was killed while cleaning a fire box on a sidetrack at Volga. A following freight train bumped the standing locomotive sending two trucks into the fireman. He died instantly.
Huron South Carolina November 9 John Milk operator of a grain elevator says Steele Bros have petitioned the state railway commission to compel the Great Northern railroad to provide them a site. A hearing is set for next Tuesday in Huron.
Federal case against Edward G. Lewis claims he fraudulently collected 1,185,000 through his mail order operation at Peoples' United States Bank. He allegedly loaned himself 844,000. Trial opened before Judge Carland with jury sworn quickly and readings from Women's Magazine and Women's Farm Journal presented to jurors.

In Wessington Springs South Dakota on November 13 a judge faced a case of a mother seeking to send her 13 year old daughter to the state reform school for stealing cookies. The judge offered to take the girl home with him and his wife and the girl was placed in their care with access to treats.
Pierre South Dakota farmer Fred Kdabert reports killing a cow near the city after it showed signs of hydrophobia following a bite from a stray dog weeks earlier. The animal grew violent and abnormal a week before its destruction.
South Dakota banks receive a directive urging stronger security after a wave of robberies. The message recommends night watchmen if possible and firearms stored away from banks for use when needed. It notes the Canova robbery as the fifth since August and mentions unclaimed rewards.
Aberdeen South Dakota officials authorize rewards up to 500 dollars each for eight prisoners who recently escaped from the county jail. The board of county commissioners, with the state's attorney and sheriff, will set final reward amounts.
Gregory S D Nov 13 reliable information says Gregory will be a principal registration point for the upcoming Tripp county opening. Gregory, five miles from the Tripp county line, is the largest town in Gregory county with about 2000 inhabitants. The town, only three years old, is noted for order and lawfulness with no shooting affrays or robberies reported.
Deadwood South Dakota November 13 changes are announced in the Black Hills forest reserve Acting supervisor E M Hamilton was notified from Washington that his appointment is permanent Horatio Brown a Yale forest assistant has resigned and George Gorder chief clerk to the supervisor has been transferred to the Colorado district Further appointments will be made for the Black Hills district
Chicago, Nov 13. Commissioner Evans orders all members of the university football team to be vaccinated immediately, but the players refuse. Evans threatens arrests if refusals continue. Two students are taken to isolation hospital with smallpox.
Reports from the McLaughlin Tie and Timber camp at West Nahant say a fierce fire west of the camp near the Wyoming border endangers half a million feet of cut timber. A special train of seventy five men was sent to save resources but was checked by the flames sweeping east through dry country.
Gregory S D reports three men Jiurlbert Wilson and White and their cook Billy duck hunting at Dog Har lake were awakened by shouts as a prairie fire bore down. They battled the blaze, set back fires, and saved their camp horses and themselves in a remarkably narrow escape.
A. I. Cole of White Lake South Dakota and Miss Margaret Hanson of Chicago married recently at the bride’s Chicago home. Cole, twice married before, advertised for a wife and Hanson replied leading to a romance and marriage now returned to White Lake where friends welcomed the couple.
In Huron South Dakota the Traveling Men's association decided at a meeting to build a home during fair week on the state fair grounds. The erection will cost at least 5000 dollars and a committee will start raising funds immediately with President R J Woods among the attendees.
Aberdeen reports the grain market ready to resume as elevators plan to accept grain and issue certificates again. Banks note large deposits despite currency strain and banks adopt cash plus cashier’s checks payment system. Shipments of currency arrive from the east and from Butte county as residents stay calm.
Sioux Falls voters defeated the Galveston plan for city government in a special election. The plan lost by a narrow margin citywide, carrying only the First Third and Fifth wards while failing in the Second Fourth and Sixth wards. Total turnout was just over 100 ballots.
Henry South Dakota reports a finished Roman Catholic church building in the town. The new edifice measures about 82 by 44 feet with a height of 28 feet, costing around 9800 dollars.
