Wimball South Dakota residents report C. K. Sanders, a noted stock buyer, fell under a slowly moving passenger train and suffered a leg injury requiring amputation. Earlier, W. G. Richards’s twin daughter sustained severe burns when her clothing caught fire, with their mother Mrs Richards attempting to aid her child.
Reported unrest near the Cheyenne reservation after Ute protests against schooling and government contracts. Captain Downs dispatched fifty armed citizens, then requisitioned regent soldiers from Des Moines as civilians and Second Cavalry officers move to calm tensions. Army leaders hope for a peaceful resolution with minimal conflict.
Twenty or more city teachers gathered at the Pay residence in appreciation of a citywide carriage ride by Illinois street school teachers. A Brooklyn telegram reported the death of Mrs Anna Van Dalsem, mother of local judge H A Van Dalsem, who had recently visited her with his wife after twenty five years.
Aurora South Dakota October 30 delays arise in starting a star route between Aurora and White after bids were rejected as too high. New bids will be opened in Washington November with service possible December 12 pending acceptance. Daily trips start 7 am from Aurora and 1 30 pm from White via Bushnell.
Yankton South Dakota October 30 Dave Wallace a county grading contractor was held up but used a stone he had just picked up to strike his attacker and floor him. The assailant fled as help was sought to take him to jail. Wallace left the scene believing the man was dead after fifteen minutes of unconsciousness.
A 16-year-old William Kurt Jr. of 1824 Twenty third Street Philadelphia hanged himself in his room after a week of toothache. His sister Mary had bought tickets to a theater to distract him but found the body when she checked on him. A sash cord was used, the chair removed, leaving his feet barely touching the floor.
Washington on October 20 reports President Roosevelt will issue a proclamation admitting the new state of Oklahoma on November 16. The notice outlines the formal act by the administration.
Walter Smeetson a wealthy farmer near Wagner S D advertised in the local paper offering to hire a man to plow with a riding implement and to furnish feed breakfast and stable care. The ad promised a team buggy or an automobile and stated he would buy one if the man preferred an automobile. Within a day applicants offered but would only start after the car arrives. He will rent a machine pending delivery of a large touring car from an eastern manufacturer.
Peter Schladweiler, 15, of South Dakota, was bitten twice by a mad dog about two weeks ago. Despite early precautions, he developed hydrophobia and was sent to the Pasteur Institute in Chicago where officials report little hope for recovery.

Abidesn and DD report a frontier tragedy west of the Missouri where contractor Al Gilland forced two men to swim a river at Robert I Wincaid’s Little Missouri camp. Gilland shot the bartender after a saloon confrontation. the bartender killed Gilland in self defense. The camp endured terror and the bartender was badly wounded.
Rapid City South Dakota October 1 settlers react to a Washington ruling by the general land office that commutation proofs must show fourteen consecutive months of actual residence and cultivation. The policy, to take effect November 1, rejects proofs unless the full period is shown, with only a six month constructive residence allowed for pre November 1 entries.
Mrs. John Scott of Sunnyside dashed into a burning house to save six men who were unconscious from smoke. She pulled three from their beds and half dragged the others to safety, risking her life in the blaze.
P Robbins and his niece left Monday for New Mexico seeking a climate change to aid his failing health.
In Milbank M D Oct storms on Bull Lake Sunday morning a boat carrying Earl Stapleton Floyd Burrhill and companions capsized. Stapleton and Burrhill drowned while South and Hill were rescued. Burrhill was visiting Corona. Stapleton worked for Wood Pros in the city. Bodies not recovered.
Des Moines reports say four troops of the Second U S Cavalry under Major Sibley leave on two special trains to the Cheyenne River reservation near Gettysburg S C to quell an uprising among about 400 Utes. Sergeant Baker, distributing rations to Utes, was killed. Troops FE F G and H will reach the scene in ~30 hours and stay for months.
Governor Crawford refuses to grant clemency to Israel Calkins sentenced for cattle rustling in Wall River county. No judge or jury signced the pardon petition. The history society receives a preserved limb and arrow fragment from 1889 found at Sturgis. Thompson named state university rep to Columbus taxation conference on November 12.
Rapid City, S. D. Oct 29. In a few weeks another industry will be ready for Rapid City. The Black Hills Gypsum Products company has nearly completed its large stucco plant and expects to be turning out the raw product in sixty days. The plant will have a capacity of two carloads a day of wall plaster for which orders have been received in advance.
At Viborg depot the Crawford family from four miles outside town was taken to a Great Northern train bound for Yankton as typhoid fever struck every member. Mrs Crawford and one daughter rode on cots, while Michael Crawford carried a son wrapped in quilts. Nurses refused to continue home care due to poor arrangements, prompting hospital admission.
Robert E. Downs sues Chicago and Northwestern Railway in circuit court at Huron for 1999 dollars claiming injuries from a work accident last December. While loading a tire onto a locomotive drive wheel, the wheel slipped and crushed his foot, keeping him from work and prompting family aid. The amount is below 2500 to keep the case in state court.

Sioux Falls South Dakota holds a special election Tuesday November 5 to decide adoption of the Galveston plan of municipal government. Gregory South Dakota Oct 28 Ross Farmer Crossman of the Rosebud reservation seized cattle bought by homesteaders from Indians on the reservation. The incident exposes newcomers to the rule that Indians cannot sell stock issued to them by the government. Several thousand eastern homesteaders in the Missouri River to Black Hills area should learn from this experience.
Lemmon South Dakota October 28. In the midst of town moving confusion local stockmen ship their first cattle trainload of eighty one cars to eastern markets by rail direct from Lemmon. The stock will reach Sioux City Omaha and Chicago markets. More shipments will follow despite chaotic railroad station conditions due to the town move.
Gettysburg South Dakota October 28 S G Manful a local gardener owns a rare plant freak a cabbage stump from which the original head was removed. A seed shoot rose fifteen inches then formed a cone surrounding twenty six tiny heads of cabbage each fully formed. Sizes range from baseball to half that size.
Beadle county officials report that candidates at the recent teacher certificate examination included entrants from Minnesota Wisconsin Iowa Illinois Nebraska Kansas Vermont North Carolina and Ohio. Only about a quarter of applicants were residents of South Dakota.
A fire in Hot Springs South Dakota destroyed the Miawatha ham and Catholic Lali houses last night. The blaze started from a downed live wire. Loss estimated at about 30,000 dollars with property damage around 29,000 dollars.

Canova South Dakota October 26 Farmers living midway between Canova and Salem have secured a sidetrack on the Chicago and Northwestern railroad after months of effort. The sidetrack will not create a new town but will aid farmers who wish to ship grain from the midway point rather than hauling to Canova or Salem.
Aberdeen South Dakota October 26 Colonel J H Slater is named aide de camp on Governor Crawford's staff with colonel rank after returning from Hot Springs. A Civil War veteran he knows regulations well and currently serves as officer of the guard in the G A R and as staff colonel for General Ballweg of the Union Veterans league.
Belle Fourche South Dakota reports preparations for the annual wolf roundup on Saturday. Captain James T. Craig orders participants to report at dark Friday for position assignments as wolves and coyotes have been unusually plentiful.
Richard Goddard of near Pringle, South Dakota, confessed to killing a steer owned by George Brady. The carcass and hide were found on his property. He pleaded guilty at trial and received eight months in prison while a 14 year old boy related to the case was sent to the state reform school.
Mrs. Annie Miljas, held on a charge of attempting to extort $20 000 from T. J. Grier, superintendent of Homestake Mining, is likely to be tried in local courts but will face federal action for misuse of the mails. A post office inspector from the east is expected to assume charge and she may be sent to Sioux Falls for federal trial. Bail remains under $2,000 on prior charges of erasing and passing canceled checks.
Arlington S D October 25 The old town of Medary in Brookings county once a county seat and trading post is to be replatted as a modern business center. A new electric line from Brookings to Sioux Falls begins grading here and lots are selling with plans for an elevator and other lines of business. The site near Lake Campbell, a popular summer resort, is expected to become a prosperous village serving Brookings residents and farm country.
South Dakota cattle inspectors report ongoing scabies concerns as eastern counties resist dipping orders while western areas show progress. Government cooperation reduced disease earlier, but state quarantine threats loom if owners do not adopt radical dipping measures before spring shipments.
In Custer South Dakota on October 25 a mountain lion leaped from bushes and charged a boy named Eddy Korthaus who rode toward it. The horse bolted with the pair sliding toward danger as hunters prepare to follow the predator once snow allows tracking.
Hayes South Dakota Oct 25 A large colony of Illinois people is locating in the ceded Sioux lands between the Missouri River and the Black Hills. Forty eight families have arrived and more will join before the first of the coming year.
Yankton South Dakota October 25 Ralph Kositzky 18 son of Gustave Kositzky of the Yankton Printing company was badly scalded when a kettle of water tipped over into a furnace steam burst from the furnace door scalding his face arms and breast. He is recovering and should do well unless complications occur.
October receipts from the state inheritance tax total nearly 3000 with small county sums. Largest single payment comes from Van Eps estate in Minnekozka county at 1638.30. Other counties report varied amounts from Wm Van Eps, M R Kenefick, Quayle, Camp, McCorreill, King, Carn, Maines, Bellay, and Nelson estates. This income source is growing, adding revenue hourly.
