Yankton South Dakota May 22 a 40 mile gale fire uncovered early this morning in the A L Van Osdel store at Mission Hill four miles north of Yankton destroying the store and contents valued at twenty thousand dollars with nine thousand dollars insurance. The adjacent bank valued at five thousand dollars and owned largely by A O Anseth and W H McMaster was also destroyed with partial insurance. The Yankton fire department fought the blaze and the balance of the town was saved. This marks the second fire at the Van Osdel site in four years.

George Van Brunt of Kansas City told Justice Daly he was forced to steal as part of a secret society initiation. Van Brunt and Thomas C. Wanty of Grand Rapids, with others, were stopped by Patrolman O'Mara after attempting to steal a red light. They pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. Van Brunt fined 50 dollars plus costs and suspended from the university for one year.

Belle Fourche S D May 22 Word from the Long Pine national forest northwest of here reports the most destructive forest fire in years. The blaze started Friday night at Plum creek head and spread with high winds until Monday burning over 10 000 acres across a ten mile by one to two mile swath. Homes were threatened and residents joined in the effort as the young timber burned. the area had earlier suffered a complete forest destruction twenty two years ago by fire.
