Devastating Fire After College Move Burns University Building
The 1884 conference chose a single college plan after Mitchell’s offer and land purchase. A granite dormitory complex burned rapidly, killing two students and injuring many as flames and smoke trapped others. Prof T A Duncan escaped from the roof, sliding down a rope to safety near the ground. Arza Jones was among the injured students.

Mitchell College Fire Tests Trustees Resolve and Leadership
Survivors recall a devastating fire at Mitchell College that left the campus looted and the Barber building as shelter. Trustees secured funds and the title remained with A M Bowdle while Bishop Walden pressed for restoration. A three bishop commission then weighed guarantees and progress to decide if Mitchell would stay or relocate as Huron Watertown and Sioux Falls eyed the prize.
