Oratorical Convention Elects Officers and Plans 1900 Meet
The oratorical association held its annual convention with Geo Fitch of Yankton as president and A J Carpenter of Redfield as secretary treasurer. O E Fell of Huron named vice president of the Western League. J B Reese of Yankton to be elected next month. Next contest to be held in Mitchell in 1900 alongside the athletic meet. receipts for Thursday night reached 344, a record. A R Groenke of Die Dakota Post spoke on Germany’s role and warned against an Anglo-American press bias. a prologue he recited praised German loyalty and warned against alliance with England.

Vermillion Wins Oratorical Cup Then Forfeits Title
At a Grand Opera house jollification Dakota University won the silver cup after five Vermillion disqualifications altered results. Vermillion delegates withdrew from the association with Yankton claiming the cup and Mitchell receiving second. Officers elected and gate receipts totaled $561.80 with shares allotted to five colleges. The convention adjourned as Mitchell secures permanent hosting in the state association.

Vermillion University doctors a correspondent contends state officials disqualified five students and forfeited the silver cup after claiming the university faced long standing prejudice. The Mitchell meet saw Vermillion win many events before protests over alleged professionalism prompted the cup transfer to Yankton College. Fights and blockades followed as Vermillion supporters protested the ruling and defended eligibility.
