Origin of the Banjo A Primitive Instrument
A Richmond Dispatch recall of the banjo’s origins before Joe Sweeney notes early four-string gourd drums, horsehair strings, and black musicians. It praises Sweeney for popularizing the banjo, details his stage presence and vocal warmth, and records his poverty and last words about a out of tune instrument.

Strange Caucasus custom ties mourning to dowry of the dead son
A Caucasus tribe observes a practice where a bereaved family accepts a marriagedoff daughter from a man who bore their deceased son to the grave. The donor provides the dowry, and the two families agree on payment, sometimes reaching sums like 30 cows for a deceased son’s wife. The custom varies with the deceased son’s perceived life chances. England’s first water eas patent was issued by Cruick shiuiks in 1539.
