In Mankato on May 17 a gas escape at the Mankato Gas Light plant nearly killed Joseph Presley Jr the superintendent. He descended to a basement chamber similar to the McCurdy accident site and was overcome by gas within minutes. Resuscitation began immediately and Presley recovered consciousness after about three hours before being taken home. doctors consider his prospects favorable while McCurdy’s death from asphyxiation is noted.
May 17 reports from Grand Forks detail the opening of the Grand Lodge and Encampment I O O F with numerous officials arriving from several towns. Names include Grand master N J Rice Huron deputy grand master C T Rowe Chamberlain and others from Sioux Falls Lead City Yankton Milbank Reynolds Elk Point and Madison.
In San Francisco on May 17 it is reported that transcontinental lines will join in boycotting all American connections of the Canadian Pacific. They oppose lower freight rates offered to Canadian Pacific coming into Pacific coast routes, despite larger tonnage from American lines. Overland lines named include St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba, St. Paul & Omaha, and Kansas City & St. Joseph.
Minnie Brohm of Newburgh New York attempted suicide at Luzerne House in Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania after a jealous dispute with Mrs. Donald, wife of saloon keeper James Donald. The incident followed a confrontation with Minnie Fairchilds, sister of the man’s wife, and a gunshot narrowly missing Donald. Minnie Brohm is under arrest. the parties claim high standing in the community.
In Boonton New Hampshire on May 16 August Hable a 60 year old man shot and killed John Kelly a would be suitor of Hable's wife after Kelly tried to enter Mrs Hable's room. Hable was arrested following the incident.
Mason City notes the death of James W. Thompson at his home just before 2 am. He was the oldest active locomotive engineer in the United States with an exemplary safety record and operated the first train into Mason City. Iowa and Dakota division engines are draped in mourning. Funeral services are set for tomorrow conducted by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He is survived by a widow and four children.
Authorities at Castle Garden struggled to process a large influx as 3,000 immigrants rested on the floor overnight. Many slept without beds or bedding, and transfers to western destinations could not be completed for all yesterday.
Edward Morris of Fairbanks Canning in Chicago reports from Paris a contract for 1,500,000 kilos of canned meat for the French army and 3,000,000 kilos for the navy. The deal is described as the largest contract ever with an American firm by a foreign government.
The Yankton Press argues against celebrating July 4 in Dakota, urging a united demand for admission to statehood. It warns Congress may be forced to open the path by outside pressure and insists rights are secured when Dakotans act as one.

William Slaughter a wealthy stock raiser was shot by two men named Youngblood and Adkins after an old feud over cattle theft indictments. Slaughter died after being pursued and fired upon while fleeing. Law officers are pursuing the assailants.
May 17 report from Yankton describes Robert Sturgeon, a Chamberlain druggist and former liquor supplier to Indians, as owner of a store visited by several Indians who drank a whisky substitute. Three died and others are in precarious condition. Indians at Lower Brule agency are stirred. authorities had not yet arrested Sturgeon.
Albany May 17 Governor Hill sent Col Fred Grant's name to the senate for the quarantine commissioner post.

HALIFrax May 18. The extended strike at the Pictou coal mines concludes as Albion collier workers accept a six cent per ton cut on wide work and thirteen cents per ton on narrow work. Acadia mine workers sign an agreement rejecting influence over hiring.
The Aberdeen artesian well has paused its great output for several days. Officials note the loss of pressure when opened and suspect a clog near the bottom leaving only a small orifice. Workers have begun running surplus water to flush the subterranean cavern and restore the previous power.
John Verbanck of 388 North Sangamon Street sacrificed his life saving his 18 month old from a Northwestern rail near his home. He threw the child clear as a switch engine approached, but was struck by a wheel. Severely mangled, he died tonight after his leg was amputated and injuries treated.
Carrie Patton is reappointed postmistress at Ogallala Nebraska. Hyatt, the newly named treasurer, will not assume office until next week due to bond formalities. Major Perley Poore suffered a stomach illness from overwork and heat but was restored by three doctors and is expected to recover with rest.

William Downs, an elderly resident near Sibley Iowa, was beaten and left insensible in his barn after a 2:30 a.m. intrusion. He recalls a late stage assault at the barn door and wall marks from prior blows. Police have yet to arrest a suspect.
Near noon in Hammond Indiana a four story distillery and adjacent factory burned. The Journal Des Moines reports the case against Lb. F. Allen, president of the insurance company, was dismissed after no evidence of fraud appeared in the transfer of company funds.
Fire swept through Fresno California last evening destroying about thirty houses and contents in the Chinese quarters. The blaze started in a dance house when a lamp was upset. Estimated loss is fifty thousand dollars with little insurance.
